The United States had 418,500 military and civilian deaths in World War II. The Soviet Union had 24 million military and civilian deaths. That figure is mind boggling.

But did the Russians fight Japan?

like, They went balls out against Germany but did they assist on other fronts?
Well the deal Stalin and Rosevelt made was that Stalin would help in the Pacific after Germany was defeated. I don't know to what extent this became reality because Truman treated Stalin like shite and basically ensured he'd become our enemy

Is that not correct in your opinion?

Stalin himself ensured that he would be an enemy of the United States and the western world

I'm guessing for them the "turning point" of WWII would be Stalingrad?
It is absolutely the defining battle from their POV.

How so?
Stalin was ruthless as frick but he pretty much did everything he promised Rosevelt he'd do until Rosevelt died and Truman started chewing out his diplomats and ridiculing him for occupying Poland (which Stalin shouldn't have done but I see why he did)

See, I don't know anything about that front of the war..
I'm sure India and Australia were in the fight..
I'm guessing the french took Vietnam somehow in the mix..
Was China just doing it's own thing?
Sorry for threadjack..

Why don't you go ahead and give a few sources on that statement?
This place is great for exposing ignorance and stupidity.

Russians believe - rightly so - that the war against Germany could not have been won without the Red Army. They get extremely irritated when Western historians cite the weather (coldest winter in forever) as a significant factor in defeating the Germans on the Eastern Front. They're also irritated by the fact that their staggering amount of casualties (8-10 million on Eastern Front) seems to get swept away as a footnote.
The victory in WWII / The Great Patriotic War is a key component in Russian national identity. Victory Day (9 May) is one of if not the most revered holiday in Russia and most of the former Soviet states.

quote:because he was one of the most brutal dictators in human history who had a massive distrust of all things in the western world and, from day one of the war time alliance, squabbled with the western allies over how the post war Europe would look. And then, from day one after the war was over, started skirting those agreements and basically set the stage for the cold war in europe
How so?

To act like it was the United States who soured our relationship with the Soviet Union and not the other way around is crazy

In Stalingrad alone the Russian claim
quote:
The USSR, according to archival figures, suffered 1,129,619 total casualties; 478,741 personnel killed or missing, and 650,878 wounded or sick. T
I don't really have a problem with their history class being brief on American battles for Western Europe.

The truth is basically the other way around, Russia did way more damage to Hitler than all the other Allies combined, Hitler was close to defeat by the time Dday happened.
Without the Battle of the Atlantic and our constant supplying of Russia via convoys none of this happens.
Ignorant WWII guy: "USA WON THE WAR FOR THE ALLIES"
Semi knowledgable WWII guy: "No you dummy, the Russians were responsible for the victory"
Actuality: The war was won due to the combined efforts and any removal of the Brits, Americans, or Russians would have resulted in a prolonged war with an eventual Allied victory. Russia wasn't doing shite without our supplies coming across the Atlantic though.

Well India and Australia were both British dominions so the both fought for the Allies. The Indians generally hated the British and many switched sides (while many fought hard for the Allies). The Australians fought for the Allies.
China was busy being conquered by Japan

Kids in public school and universities are now taught that white people are bad, white men are criminals and rich white men are the devil. WW II. ha!

Agreed. The Soviet Union absolutely took the main fight in the European war. No question. But to act like the western allies just came in and took the credit is stupid and ridiculous
