Depends on the location of the roundabout, it's not a catch all design. If you have heavy traffic coming from one of the directions, it can completely frick up the rest of the entries.

I know you said no sermon on safety, but they do an awesome job at dropping crash severity. Property damage crashes do rise though.

Kansas State University measured traffic flow at intersections before and after conversion to roundabouts. In each case, installing a roundabout led to a 20 percent reduction in delays. Additional studies by the IIHS of intersections in three states, including Washington, found that roundabouts contributed to an 89 percent reduction in delays and 56 percent reduction in vehicle stops.

Roundabouts reduced injury crashes by 75 percent at intersections where stop signs or signals were previously used for traffic control, according to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Studies by the IIHS and Federal Highway Administration have shown that roundabouts typically achieve: A 37 percent reduction in overall collisions A 75 percent reduction in injury collisions A 90 percent reduction in fatality collisions A 40 percent reduction in pedestrian collisions

Do roundabouts move traffic better than traditional 4-way stops or traffic light intersections?

Better than a 4-way stop for sure, especially if volume is approximately equal in all directions. Probably not better than a traffic signal.

You don't speed up to not let someone in.

The ones around here are fantastic. Traffic moves so much better... no comparison to before.

So yeah, they work. I think in most situations they work better, but they have to be designed properly, especially in high traffic areas. You have to have the offset to slow down on coming traffic enough for other cars to enter safely.

Continues to show why idiots cause issues in them.

There it is again. Do people in Louisiana not understand that it's ok to stop and let traffic clear? That holding your position and letting the guy with right-of-way go is OK? I swear...

In those situations, extreme rush hour traffic for example, you want a multiple roundabout design.

Not true. Both roundabouts I use regularly were traffic signals prior. Traffic signals suck one less notch under 4 way stop signs. Roundabouts keep a constant traffic flow.

But at what average speed vs before? Time/distance/speed.

Honestly, people don't even understand how 4 way stops work in most cases. Might as well have a roundabout and let them sort it while moving.
