I think it’s to moisten the food because of insufficient saliva.

Yeah. Their saliva is only sufficient to spread rabies.

To moisten their food is the correct answer . I had a pet raccoon named Leroy and my neighbor had one named Tyrone. We even had a feature article in the newspaper. I can only imagine the outcry today.
