I seriously put one, or at least a few slices of one in every gumbo I make. The fact is I make a really good seafood one, and my turkey and Andouille one is excellent, and I put tomato in it just because people are such bitches about it. Now granted, it's mostly used as my liquid to cook down okra, and there's literally not enough to ever taste it, but I hate people who irrationally hate tomatoes in gumbo, so they get what they fricking deserve. How people can put nasty-arse potato salad in gumbo, but object to a tomato blows my mind.

My mom mentioned that when she was a little girl in Lafayette, during WW2, her grandmother would put boiled eggs in gumbo to stretch it out since meat was rationed. Sounds disgusting.

My husband’s family is from Terrebonne parish - and he had a cousin that married a girl from south lafourche - that was the first time he ever saw eggs in gumbo

Some people swear that people in Terrebonne parish do that - but my husbands family (and the family friends) never did, and neither did my great grandma who was from down there

Her grandmother, my-great grandmother, was from around Kaplan. Still can't imagine gumbo with boiled eggs, but she also tended to put just about every part of the bird in her chicken gumbo as well! She lived to be 103 so I guess she was doing something right!

Do you put ketchup on your jambalaya?

Some of the same people that tease me about tomatoes in my shrimp and sausage jambalaya put ketchup on their chicken and sausage jambalaya

I thought it was a German thing. My great grandmother put them in her stews.

Yes because there’s a creole style of gumbo and a Cajun style of gumbo. Just like jambalaya.
