In General, Depends on how busy the ER and if it has a crappy population. ER MDs in the Southeast make the most. I made more in the BTR, Houston, NOLA, and Mobile than I do now. But I don't deal with alot of BS and Gun and Knife members. And most of those Physician salaries charts show ER MDS low because a lot of residents moonlight and don't make much because they don't make much and don't work many shifts

Why does orthopedics pay so much money?

I was surprised at that too.

My son is interested in that field. Is it a hard specialty to get into since the pay is high?

The hardest to get into, not that hard once you finish. Ortho can make over 7 figures.

Would you say it's harder than Derm or ENT?

I always heard top of class gets pick of the litter and it's usually either Derm or ENT

There’s an ER doc in our family. He’s about 45 I think. He told me he’s got about 5 more years then he’s done. Said it’s very draining, at least where he is at. He has probably 15 rental properties and I think he would be perfectly happy stepping away from medicine and just managing those. He doesn’t need the money anymore and he’s kind of over the point of doing it for the “love” of the patient care.

Money involved. Derm is so hard because of the relative money you can make with a nice lifestyle. ENT harder than most I would put it behind Ortho, Optho, and Derm. Psych is becoming more popular because they can make serious money now with addiction medicine and great lifestyle

That and politics, But the top of the class get to do what they want

I can see that with a low overhead private practice...and make your own hours, work when you want.

ER docs have practically zero expense. Just show up, get paid, go home. No staff, no rent, no utilities, no equipment costs, etc. Just mal-practice insurance and CME's. So their take home is very near what they earn.

the cash only suboxone addiction clinics are no better than the pain clinic pill-pushin low life doctors through the 2000s

I enjoy watching ER documentaries and real life shows (trauma: life and death in the ER) about ER docs. I can’t imagine being able to do that for very long tho and not becoming so desensitized to the carnage that it doesn’t make you a little weird. Distant in the least.
Can’t imagine seeing mangled masses everyday and not becoming somewhat dehumanized.

You get used to it(but never lose compassion), every once in a while a challenging case hits home.

True but Obamacare said Insurance has to pay it and there are some upscale places now. There is a speciality in Addiction Medicine and a fellowship path for nonpscyh MDs

Is the upside, downside is you have to tow the company line at the hospital and alot of hospitals still love the satisfaction surveys which are bullshite.

Belt, not being careful with a saw, pulling some stupid stunt)?

People who work along time in the ER develop a very dark sense of humor. And if you knew what we really say about youyou probably wound be offended

Well I can understand the dark humor. If you knew what I said about y’all after you saved me, you’d be offended too.
