I look at lots and real estate out there ever since my visit to Big Bend National Park. I absolutely loved the isolation out there but can’t imagine how brutal the summers must be.

My septic system at home is better than the city system and we had Starlink internet for months before we got att(worked just as good). Clean water isn’t an issue even though I grew up on well water. You can have almost any luxury you want being secluded now.

BFE is great when young and healthy, not so great when older....

Being 1-2hrs from a major medical center could cost you your life... MI/CVA, etc

My FIL does. We're visiting with him during the Christmas break. This pic is right around the corner from his house.

The snow filled bowl on the left is his "neighborhood"

Its a tradeoff I am willing to take. I'd rather die in paradise than have to live in some urban concrete jungle.

When you get older, you need far less entertainment and more internal peace.

I grew up in the middle of nowhere. I’m here now.

It’s not Montana secluded, but if I want a snickers and a co-cola, the nearest store is 15 miles away. There are no neighbors for 5 miles. We live on a GA red clay road that the county sucks balls at maintaining, and it’s not a shortcut to anywhere.

Preach brotha. I'd rather live well and die young than live long and not enjoy nature and the great outdoors.

Yeah, we had a place on an island. Moved downtown for the granddaughter as almost all she needs is there.

I can 100% respect that sentiment.

I just get people flown in from a small rural hospital with delayed care because they didn't have access to interventional radiology/ cath lab. As a result, they now live w/ debilitating deficits that would not have occurred had they been closer.

Risk/Reward

We have an air ambulance membership operated by the University of Washington, which helps. Its less than $100 a year for a family.

You could just as easily have a stroke or take a fall while you’re alone and suffer the same outcome. Suffer even worse if you are on a subway on a big city subway.

Sure, but you're not 1-2hrs from definitive treatment which is the difference between returning to baseline or living as "a vegetable"

Used to live in rural Alaska off the road system in a small community in SW Alaska.

People can make a good living out there if you show up to work on time and don't stay drunk at all times of the day

Which is a hard task for locals in alot of those communities

I live on a 750 acre farm. It is not what you would call truly secluded but the nearest neighbor is nearly a mile away. The nearest grocery store is an hour round trip. An ambulance takes 30 minutes to get here but there are some local volunteers with medical training who can provide care until it gets here. I love the peace and quiet, no crime, beautiful scenery, and low stress. Sitting on the back porch watching the deer is something I really enoy.
