playing video games with a headset on while ignoring your 4 yr old, 18 month old, and wife at 630pm on a Tuesday Evening?
It helps if you have a wife that is cool with it being your hobby and you not being a dick about it. I play games when the opportunity presents itself or just ask my wife if she minds if I play for a while. She plays too and does the same. Some times I'll go weeks without playing at all and sometimes on weekends I stay up till 3:00 and my wife lets me sleep till 10:00. As long as you treat it as any other hobby and dont allow it to interfere with family life its fine.

I would rather fish, hunt, and camp with my free time rather than play video games.
You’re a BAMF if you can fish, hunt, and camp at 9:00PM on a Tuesday
I only strap up when the family is in bed and everything is lined up for the next day
When video games become a priority, instead of an option, that’s when you have a problem

I'm not sure any girl is worth making the decision of having a hobby or only being into things she allows you to like. Sounds awful.

You heard that somewhere?
Yeah, your post here:
quote:
You’re not really a man if at bedtime you’re not too tired to play video games.
quote:
I know that when I played video games a lot when first married, it wasn’t an occasional thing. It was most nights, and it was not manly behavior.
Sounds like you're projecting then because you lack self discipline. And to act like you're the expert on manly behavior is laughable.
quote:
My comments in this thread are about people who have a habit of staying up playing video games well past the time their family goes to bed.
IMO that’s a poor use of their time, and I completely understand how it would cause problems in many marriages.
Just because it caused problems in yours doesn't mean it's bad for someone else.

Exactly.
These people are acting like everyone is playing all through the night while their wife lays in bed crying about being alone and the baby hasn't been fed. It's like the only scenario they see is the worst case

Strap up?? Is that what y’all are calling it these days? Do y’all call the controller ‘gats’?
I just love how y’all try to make playing a game sound all bad arse and cool?
“Yo Timmy, strap up and grab a seat, we about to bring the heat on these bitches in Final Fantasy”.

Gaming is a metal health disorder. You, as well as others in this thread are in denial.
dont hate the player, hate the gaming
quote:
The World Health Organization includes "gaming disorder" in its list of mental health conditions. The WHO defines the disorder as a "persistent or recurrent" behavior pattern of "sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning."
The disorder is characterized by "impaired control" with increasing priority given to gaming and "escalation," despite "negative consequences."

Impressive spin on that definition.

Truth.
FWIW, a few teammates of my kids have dads who are NEVER at games on weekends b/c they are at the camp either using it, working on it, building something new to it, etc.
It's not like they are at home improving the quality of life for the family. It's selfish indulgence in a hobby or distraction.
The underlying concept is balance. Anyone simply making fun of the allure of video games is off-base.
Many 'real' men don't get the itch to go sit in a deer stand all weekend waiting for a deer with antlers to stroll by.

this thread is alot like gun threads, many giving opinions on stuff they dont know anything about
Posted on 3/6/18 at 11:31 am to Tiger Ryno
If you are ignoring your wife and family and/or letting your wife do the majority of the housework while you're having fun, well then yea that's gonna be an issue no matter what the distraction is.
As for the late night problem -- I agree with the logic that men should be able to stay up late and do whatever they want after the family goes to bed. However, my wife does not agree. So there's that.

Finally, I found something you and I agree on
It’s only a problem for the people who don’t have enough discipline to regulate their priorities
