I’m sure he carries a knife, every diver I know considers it standard equipment. Along with a knife mounted ant my chest I also carry a pair of trauma shears (in case of getting snagged on a line with steel leader, and usually a back up knife on my calf.
I’m guessing the screwdriver was attached to his wrist with a lanyard, sounds like it was his only option.
