I guess ppl should not get married at european castles, the Pantheon in Rome, or any building built prior to 1800 anywhere in the world then?

Y'all know that people aren't getting married in the slave quarters, right? They're getting married where the white people lived.

I would hope that in 2015, that that "elitism" would be the elitism that our wealthy want to replication.
And I would hope that in 2015 you wouldn't be whining about something that ended in the 1860's!

and also.. fyi... most are already landmarks and museums.

weddings and events help them stay open.

don't you want young america to know the history and what happened to prevent it from happening again?

those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Good point.

I guess I can't wrap my head around getting hitched there. I've always wanted to tour one. Just not jump the broom there

well. i will say i have never a had a black friend get married at one. so i do see where you are coming from.

but they are pretty awesome when it comes to the beauty.

if they were ugly no one would be holding events. people don't get married there going "woooo... slaves were held here. roll tide!"

Well, if you want to take it a step deeper; plantations are a symbol of early America wealth, but are also a symbol of our stagnation in becoming a full democracy of the people. I don't understand why some people are so caught up with that ugly period in american history. Plantations ultimately represent a lack of progress, and relics of the past that we are working hard towards mending.
Holy shite.

This may be the dumbest thing Scruffy has ever seen you post.

You obviously haven't had family members plan a wedding, huh?

Seriously, that statement was so fricking dumb, Scruffy isn't even going to point out why.

You don't deserve an explanation.

Understandable. But just people truly are very very very very simple minded in why they would ever pick a plantation as a place to get married, and its 100% aesthetically related. I'd imagine more than a few plantation marriages took place between two people who were highly highly ignorant of any historical significance related to their wedding location. They just want everything to look nice, and want their wedding ceremony to not get f^&$#d up, the end. Then everyone eats, gets drunk, the end. Better to turn something awful into something new and happy!

Idolizing? By spending a single day of their entire life on a plantation, you define that as "idolizing" ?

For starters, here's a definition of idolizing:

quote:

i·dol·ize
'idl?iz/Submit
verb
gerund or present participle: idolizing
admire, revere, or love greatly or excessively.
"he idolized his mother"
synonyms: hero-worship, worship, revere, venerate, deify, lionize, overpraise; More

What exactly is disturbing?

Black folk and guilt filled white people think plantations should be torn down.

One of the suggested venues for our high school reunion was Destrehan Plantation and I'd say half of the black people in my graduating class threw a shite fit.

I own a small plantation. What's it to you? Would it be acceptable if it called it a farm instead?

You should tour one. And you would see that it's a beautiful place owned by people who are making a living and providing a tourist attraction for our state. These people never enslaved anyone!
