"... so they stay and shite everywhere". Well, not really. When cats take a shite they mostly dig a hole and bury it. they're pretty tidy about that. I'm o.k. with cats killing rats when they're hungry. I do agree with you that sometimes it's a fine line on some of these things. Many laws I agree with... some I do not.

yup.

There are folks out there who will shoot a hog or coyote in the guts so it runs off and dies. The same type of folks who soak sponges in bacon grease to throw out for dogs/coyotes to eat.

I think this priest would have been in the same trouble regardless of how he killed the cats. Feral cats should be considered a nuisance animal just like feral hogs.

No, i don't believe they can.

But they can own traps

Probably. I'm not a priest, but i assume they are given an allowance, and any purchases they make come from a church/diocesan budget. I'd assume ".22 caliber rifle" would get denied. Traps are much easier and probably encouraged to purchase over a weapon.

and drown animals?

Well, physically, yeah.

I'm just offering a plausible explanation rather than, "Clearly he's a serial killer". Some priests are rather gentle. And, rather than shoot and kill an animal, they see trapping and throwing the trap in the river as a way to not have to confront the nature of what they did. (Again, i'm making logical assumptions here.)

How to kill the cats? He shouldn't kill the cats. If he's going to trap them, he could call a veterinarian or animal control or animal group and ask if they would come out and take it. Chances are they will give you a number of someone who will.

How do you want him to kill the cats? It's not like he's waterboarding the cats. My assumption (key word "assumption") is he traps the cats and throws the trap in the lake. Whilst a bit cruel, i wouldn't consider that "serial killer" vibes.

There is a company that makes a repeating squirrel trap. They sell an optional "reservoir" to go with it.

That is an option. However, as a priest, they are also the caretaker of the church and it's grounds. Maybe he saw getting rid of the cats as his responsibility.

Well, as others have pointed out, this doesn't work all the time. And, personally, regarding my armadillo situation, my pest control company charges $500 to just set the traps. That doesn't guarantee a catch or disposal of the animal. It's just to provide and setup the traps. Churches don't operate on big budgets. Especially a church without a school attached. Not sure if that is the case here.

Someone's pet? Perhaps.

Feral cats? Absolutely not. They are no different than any other varmint - rat, possum, armadillo, etc.

These are not fluffy the pet cat, far from it.

Feral housecats are a scourge on Nature. They are not part of native ecosystems, and outside of Florida (which has all the invasives), they are the most impactful and destructive non-native species we have to deal with.

Have you heard of the damage they've done in Australia? They've decimated the native bird population there.

There is zero logic here. And is quite possibly the dumbest and most contradictory statement I have ever seen on here. Congrats

They're working on it here, along with all small mammals, lizards, frogs, etc. They kill......a lot.

It’s one thing to put something down with a clean shot. But I never understood how someone could stand there and actively drown an animal.

These people don't understand that. They see "cat" and they equate it to Fluffy the House Cat.

I’m surprised they don’t make a “food” that would sterilize the cats. It wouldn’t immediately solve the issue but would help the draw a line.

He should have just released them alive in one of the richest subdivisions in town, let the white liberal women deal with them, everything is their fault anyway
