Dinner Host Asking for Money when you are Leaving

So at Thanksgiving, all of the family, wives and kids go to brother in law and sister in laws house, at their invitation. Full spread, food is great, everyone has a good time.
When everyone is about to leave, brother in law asks each family for $30 to cover the food! Of course we gave it to him. It made me a little angry, my wife says to forget it.
Now he and his wife are working, so it’s not a thing like him being laid off. Bottom line is he’s a cheap skate.
What does the OT think?

I have never heard of any family doing this, especially when it's not pre-agreed upon

Did everyone bring food or did he provide it all? If he was the one who provided everything, it’s tacky but understandable.

Did this include Rona?

I would have laughed at that stupid fricker. You invite people over then you foot the bill

They should have asked others to contribute to the spread.

Tacky as frick unless it was all prearranged.
I would never ask for such a thing.

If you don't have people agree to pitch in as part of the deal then it's a scumbag move.

I think I wouldn't invite a bunch of people over for a meal on a holiday that is known for copious amounts of food if I weren't prepared to foot the bill for it.
I also think that I would give the money without argument, but I would also never again accept an invitation of any sort from that couple. Family or not, there are right and wrong ways to do things and springing shite on your guests at the last minute is not the right way.

Clearly not an OT Baller family gathering

I hate that he asked but maybe you should have offered. A Lot of work goes into it... Plus food, and clean up etc.
I hope y'all work it out, he sounds like a great guy... You piker.

Brother-in-law in trash. Period. End of story.

Time to ask him to chip in on gas money since you had to drive to his house.

Seems odd if not mentioned beforehand. I would have had to ask him if he took plastic, cause I don't carry cash.

This HAS to be a talkedaboutbeforehand sort of thing, if not...just WOW!

Reminds me of a trashy buddy of mine. A couple of years ago he moved into a new apartment that didn’t allow pets. He had a beautiful, but older husky and his only options were giving it away or taking it to the pound.
He didn’t have many friends so I hooked him up with another friend of mine that was willing to adopt his dog as a favor to me. The fricker asked for a $200 “re-homing fee”.
