re: Did your old man regularly go out at night when you were a kid?

My dad would usually do his drinking at the golf course after work. It wouldn't be unusual for him and his buddies or business associates to stay and have a drink or two after a round before he came home. Other than that, if it was to go out socially he brought my mom or stepmom depending on when.
Me, I'll go over to a buddies house occasionally on a weekend to have a few drinks with or without my spouse, especially during football season or to watch a fight. I don't drink on weekdays, but I'll go to the gym till 8:30p a few nights a week. Adults need some time to unwind away from their spouses, its ok and healthy for your mental state of mind. Not everyone acts the same around their wife and kids as they would with their buddies. That's why the women go have ladies night and the men go drinking with a buddy sometimes. I know people that do it during the week once or twice a week, I know people that might do it once a month or a few times a year. I never question what people need to do to maintain their sanity or their marriage. You do you, and that usually doesn't equal what I would do.

Kids are gone, we do whatever we feel like. Sometimes she goes out with her friends, sometimes I go out with mine, sometimes we all go out. Most of my life has been traveling for work, always go out when we get to wherever we’re going. Sometimes I drag the old lady along for that too.

Dad didn't, but Mom was always going out. Sometimes she'd make us breakfast in the same clothes she had on the night before. I guess dad was too depressed or something and never wanted to go, because he would typically cry in their room while she was gone.

I know it sounds strange but it was usually a neighborhood bar and it was a pretty common thing in New Orleans back in the 70’s...
The neighborhood bar thing is definitely an interesting phenomenon of the Metairie/Nola area. Odd how it wasn’t nearly as much of a thing in the suburb areas, as far as I know or can recall.
I mean as far as your typical corner bar, small, smoky, always with a sports game on TV and a homely waitress with a sassy attitude. I think I’m subconsciously channeling Tugy’s (in Covington) fwiw. Maybe they were more common and I just didn’t notice then.

What on earth did I just read?
So going to a bar after a game on a guys trip is weird? Or if she went on a girls trip and is at a bar without you that’s weird?
Nothing “old school” about that. This is called being a control freak with insecurity.

My step-dad: No...never really did
Me: no kids but married. Don't really go out but drink w guys regularly. I've turned my patio into a lounge and have a hell of a bourbon collection so I prefer to drink there w friends than elsewhere. It kinda annoys my wife when I have people over...maybe I should remind her of the alternative??

My Uncle worked for Budweiser and brought him a case in like 1991. They still have one of those beers in the fridge. It’s a running joke now. Just sitting there waiting for my a Uncle to find.
Haha.
Years before I was born, dad played in a local band for a while. Although he never went out to bars after we were born, my recollection as a kid was him maybe having occasional beers, listening to LSU games with a brother or cousin. But I never recall it being a thing.
But oddly enough, the pantry in our home (top shelf, right side) is/was filled with a handful of hard liquor bottles (which I don’t thing were ever touched, except by me later in HS) and tons of old school Budweiser and other drinking paraphernalia, some of which I’ve grabbed over the years. Like, a lot of glasses, mugs, even shot glasses. So although it’s never been discussed in detail I think maybe they used to party pretty hard before we were born or old enough to notice.

Does this include happy hour drinks right after work? I do kind of agree with you if we're talking late night barfly type going out, but happy hour after work without a spouse is very, very common. Wife and I both do that without each other every now and then.
i mean its signficantly less trashy, but it would depend on how often. If you are going 2 or 3 times a week after work and have kids....need to rexamine your priorties. No kids is a different story and if its once a week or so, thats different.
and yea i was talking late night barfly type thing. I have friends that do it and I find it weird as frick.

depends...if the guys trip is to go watch a game or go fishing/hunting...then no. If its going to the beach or some shite like that....yea its weird.
Something like going on a camping trip with your dad and brothers...not weird
bachelor party....not weird
couple days in PCB with the BROs for guys trip...yea fricking weird
In my expierence as a bachelor girls trips with friends were nothing more than an excuse for the girl to act a whore, so same kind of thing.
weekend girls trip with sisters and mom to go shopping or to see something in another city...not weird
girls trip to the beach for a couple days....your wifes a whore

not at all. But assuming you have kids...going late night bar fly type shite is weird and trashy as shite. Especially if its more than 2-3 times a year. Hell going to happy hour daily is trashy as frick. Drinking daily is trashy as frick too.
i guess its not old school....just not trashy.

My dad never went out after work unless it was to one of our little league games.
I rarely go out and it's always after the children are in bed. My wife will go out a couple times a week to pick up a grocery order or buy new clothes for the children.

No, he worked shift work and sleep was more important than going anywhere!

Me…I’ll go out once a month to see a buddy of mine in town, but that’s it. We drink around my kids though and I worry about what that might do to them.
You’d be surprised. I grew up in a small town where we drank very openly in high school. One of those situations where parents take the keys and no leaving once you’re there. All of our dads were fairly heavy drinkers too (for the world, not necessarily benchmarking to Louisiana).

The interesting part was none of us went wild in college or on crazy binges as alcohol wasn’t this big new thing for us.
