Not on Sabbath, but not just for this. Can't make fire, so no firearms, engines, electricty.
It isn't so much "can't carry anything" so much as carrying something constitutes work and that can't be done on Sabbath.

Mikveh. One located at Tulane.

Admittedly one of the weirder Jewish traditions. Perhaps not cutting a piece off a baby’s dick weird, but certainly in the top 5 of weird things.

That’s Childrens Hospital.
There is also an eruv for Metairie.

Who said “only”? You did.
Back to the SEC Rant, you strawman-building idiot.

Wonder why it was necessary to carve them out. Does it have to do with their chopper that pisses off all their neighbors maybe?

The fence/wall outside the facility as well as overhead high voltage lines I believe.

It is funny as hell to me that, at least in Atlanta, there is a website where the ERUV is updated weekly...first this week some businesses are in, next week others are LOL. Apparently there are also competing ERUVs LOL...depending on the sect and congregation there could be multiple versions LOL. This characteristic of Judaism...being practical while remaining technically compliant and doing so openly...speaks volumes about how a people who were, at the height of their numbers were a miniscule ethnic group, managed to survive amongst ethnic groups which outnumber them 1000s to one. What, you're not supposed to see a show on the Sabbath???

This seems to be one of those letter of the law vs spirit of the law situations…

That is just silly. Smh... As if we can "get one over" on God who knows our every thought. The day comes and your standing before Him trying to justify why you didn't follow His laws.... stuttering like a teenager trying to talk his way out of trouble. LoL

The Jews don’t really believe in all that I’m pretty sure.

Some form, but it is pretty funny trying to apply christian views/beliefs to Judism.
Rabbinic law (and which rabbinic law) is almost as important as the torah itself.
Like which is more important, the constitution or the supreme courts interpretation of it.

It’s basically that the manifested need to follow it, even with the seemingly goofiest machinations possible, is sort of the whole point. At least that’s kind of how I’ve seen it explained.
A Christian perspective might see that as “trivializing” the Law, but from the Jewish perspective the very existence of the Law, and acknowledging its existence, is really all that matters.

Can you imagine a rabbi getting to meet Yahweh, and then trying to lawyer with him?
The Scene:
*BURNING BUSH APPEARS*
"I AM THE LORD THY GOD! HAST THOU KEPT MY LAWS, RABBI BAWSTEIN!?"
Rabbi BAWSTEIN: Oy Vey! What, not even a call to let us know you were stopping in?
Yes yes, we kept your laws. No Pork, no shrimp, no eel.
Yahweh: and what about those mixed fibers?
RB: "no wool with linen. We know, we know. This rayon though, so comfortable!
Yahweh: "No way...really found a way around that one, didn't you?"
RB: "you did make us in your image, didn't you?"
Yahweh: "anyways...now what about the Sabbath? I was VERY clear on that! No work and no pushing or carrying anything outside the home. Surely this was pretty clear."
RB: "ehhhhh...define, "home".
Yahweh: "the place you dwell in. Swear to me, it's right there in the 15 commandments."
RB: "and this dwelling...could it include a garden out back? A small patio perhaps? A pergola?"
Yahweh:..."ugh, fine, as long as it's walled in, that counts. Any more questions?"
RB: "about this 'wall'...does it have to be stone? What about masonry? Or wood?
Yahweh: "I mean I suppose..."
BR: "so a fence then? A fenced in area next to the house."
Yahweh: "not really what I meant but I guess so..."
BR: "what about a metal fence? Nice wrought iron?"
Yahweh: "sure, sure, if wood was okay I guess metal must be."
BR: "ah, metal, so a chain link fence would count! What about barbed wire?"
Yahweh "hey now..."
BR: "no no, you said metal was fine..."
Yahweh: "sheesh man...okay, a wire fence is okay."
BR: "excellent" *proceeds to run a single wire around section of city to lawyer God*

I finally understand. Acknowledge the law and it's existence then develop some means to circumvent the law. No wonder there are so many Jewish lawyers.

used to have a JAP FWB that lived inside of that eruv, pretty cool chick, I'm surprised she never told me about that, first that I've heard of this as far as I can recall
Posted on 6/1/23 at 8:47 am to SixthAndBarone
I actually knew this.

Could be non-religious or reformed. Neither would care about this.
Also, the eruv around uptown has only been up about 3 years or so.
