Any medium length cut I tried as a kid was thwarted by my socially-crippling cowlick.
It was go short or sport the "fist of hair" look until it grew enough to chill the hell out.

I played a lot of sports and it was hot as hell, so I stuck with a crew cut since middle school. Still this day I cut my hair every two weeks with #1 blade guard.
