Absolutely.
Got to the point where the juice was not worth the squeeze. Hangovers became two day events after a big night. First day being what you described. Second day being a “normal” hangover. That second day I was able to have a normal lunch and life got back to normal.
Next stop is actual physical health problems. Liver, cardiac, cognitive. I went into atrial fib. Not during a hangover. But. I’m sure alcohol did not help.
Guilt was mentioned and is true. All part of the anxiety. “What the frick are you doing? You’re 41 you have a kid who understands….?” Which was true but it is also amplified by post alcohol depression and anxiety. IMO it’s part of the tipping point to total alcoholism. Where a person crosses over to “hair of the dog” thinking. Which leads to day drinking or wake up beers.
I now drink like the normal people I used to not understand. lol. Beer or a margarita with a meal. If I have two it’s an event. Probably have a drink every 10th meal out??
Old neighbor came over the past holidays. We sat one night and I had 5 beers. Wife cut me off. Glad she did because 5 was my number. Really 4 was. If I get to 4 I feel AWESOME and it becomes 14. 5 was enough. I had one of the old “normal” Gatorade and 400mg Advil kind of hangovers. I have had one margarita since that night.

As a Catholic, I have felt terrible about drinking to excess the night before since I was fourteen.
You get used to it.

shite i don't even need booze for it. Just turn on the news or open the poliboard and you'll need a bottle of xanax.

You'll get that wake up call when you start shitting yellow everyday.

I used to drink and really enjoy it. I still do, but I used to, too.

Yes, it started hitting me in my mid 30's. It's usually only if I really tie one off, which I try not to do much anymore.
A lot of good theories here on why. It's probably some combination of all of them:
- Feeling worse physically
- Ruining your next day (or multiple days)
- Guilt of being a "responsible adult" yet still getting hammered
- Dread of upcoming work or responsibilities that you feel less capable tackling
If you must, day drinking is the way to go IMO and usually results in less of these feelings because you have more time to hydrate and can get a full nights sleep.

I think I read that your body quits producing as much gaba when drunk, and when the alcohol wears off, it takes longer to re-balance, thus high anxiety.

rarely have more than 3 beers a night now. Even then I only drink on weekends.
Same here, allow myself 5 to 6 drinks total, over the weekend. May have 1 of those on Thursday.

I have a drink pretty much every night. But I stopped getting drunk once I had my first kid in my early 30s. Watching a toddler with a hangover is a special piece of hell. I’m 43 now, and I’ve probably been hangover drunk less than 10 times in the last 13 years. It does get worse. I had a bad hangover a couple of years back, and I woke up thinking I might have a damn heart attack. It’s absolutely not worth it after a certain age.

Havent been drunk since i was 29. Switch to muscadine wine for a while and beer will start to taste shittier than it already does.
