I read an article at one point about the junior engineer whose job it was to design the flag pole, receptical, and procedure for placing it on the moon. There's a wire holding it out. It's a $5 flag from Sears, too.

This. Plus both Apollo 1 and Apollo 13 happened. So we sacrificed 3 astronaut lives (1) and faked a moon mission disaster (13) -- both of which almost killed the Apollo program -- just to make it a more "realistic" hoax?
Moon landing deniers are the dumbest people.
There were literally tens of thousands of people involved in the Apollo program, from the astronauts to the administrators to the engineers to the assembly plant workers who build the equipment, and not one of them has come forward and even remotely mentioned we didn't go. As Neil DeGrasse Tyson puts it -- Bill Clinton couldn't get a BJ in the White House without the entire country finding out a few weeks later. Nixon sanctioned the Watergate break-in and got pinched for it not two years later.
It's the ultimate irony to believe that our government is horribly inept and inefficient yet simultaneously believe that we successfully faked 6 moon landings (and 9 lunar orbit missions) so much that even the USSR and China have admitted the landings happened.
