An additional 232,000 military personnel were still missing as of 2017, a total of 1,081,000 dead and missing for the American War.

Us casualties in Vietnam

58,281 Killed in action (KIA) or non-combat deaths (including the missing and deaths in captivity)[80] [See note, below.]

153,372 Wounded in action (WIA) (excluding 150,332 persons not requiring hospital care)[81]

1,584 Missing in action (MIA) (originally 2,646)[a][84]

766–778 POW (652–662 freed/escaped,[b][86][87] 114–116 died in captivity)[86][88]

Yes the Souths government fell as soon as we pulled out, but as of today Vietnam has a strategic partnership with the US, and the government is communist in name only, a lot of manufacturing that was in china is moving there, so yea we had to withdraw but capitalism eventually won, but was it worth 60,000 dead

It was never about winning or losing. It was a money endeavor for certain people in our government.

Did the US achieve the objective of preventing the communist from taking over?

Yes because of what it did to the US, spitting on returning service members, the caskets showing up. It divided a nation during the bra burning era. That war was brutal over there and those at home. During WW II it was about unity, Vietnam was about division.

We could have that without a war. Ho Chi Minh fought with us against the Japanese then we double crossed him and sided with the French when they wanted their colonial empire back.

During the war the US was not allowed into Laos and Camnbodia, Politics began and ended the war.

From a milt standpoint, no; the US did not lose the Vietnam War. In fact, it was one of the most lopsided wars in history. Even the so-called “turning point” of the war, the 1968 Tet Offensive was actually an unmitigated disaster for the North Vietnamese Army and effectively destroyed the Vet Cong as an effective military force. It wasn’t until 1972 that the NVA had recovered enough to go on the offensive again. And by this time, almost all US ground forces had already left Vietnam. But like the Tet Offensive in 1968, the 1972 “Easter Offensive” was also a failure forge North. This failure, coupled with the restarting of bombing the North by Nixon that forced the North to sign the Paris Peace Treaty ending the war in 1973 with South Vietnam still standing.

Following the end of the war in 1973, Democrats in Congress moved to cut off all military aid to South Vietnam. Meanwhile, the USSR was flooding military aid into North Vietnam. By 1975 the NVA had rebuilt itself and was ready for its third big offensive in the South. Th South, having been cut off from any help for the past two years, again thanks to Democrats in the US Congress, was in dire straits. Most of their aircraft and vehicles were in bad shape du to lack of parts, morale was low in the armed forces because thy knew they’d been betrayed by what was supposed to be their main ally. It didn’t take long for the rejuvenated NVA to overrun the withered South Vietnamese Army.

The story you’ve been told about the Vietnam War is a lie. We didn’t lose that war. We won it in 1973. But after the war we betrayed our ally and left them in the lurch.

Vietnam was a theater in a much larger war, which was The Cold War. America won that war. The war in Vietnam was to stop the spread of Communism. We would have liked to stop it with a free Vietnam. We failed at that; but we did stop it.

After being defeated in the Tet Offensive, NV leaders were amazed to read Western press accounts saying they'd won

This. My father flew Hueys in Vietnam. He blamed the loss on politicians restricting the rules of engagement. Imagine not being allowed to bomb Hanoi. Ridiculous.

No. We left with a peace agreement in place that basically made it another Korea.

Communists being Communists, it wasn't worth the paper it was printed on.

You can lose a war despite having fewer casualties.

If the measurement of victory was preventing a communist take over of Vietnam, then it was lost because that totally happened.

The cost of "victory" turned out to be too high so we said screw this and left.

We didn’t win, that much is clear. We lost as soon as we entered.

The evening news always began with the death count and correspondents reporting from the war. How they came up with the death counts is beyond me and it was for both sides.

Then on to the reports on protests and riots the civil rights movement and then sprinkle in a few assassinations here and there and it was a crazy time to grow up in.

Unfortunately, the scum that ran that war for the US did not want to win that war. They just wanted to make as much money as possible for the military industrial complex - who they went to work for both during the war and after the war.

No. Our government chose to quit. Same as in the Middle East. It’s such a disgrace to the young men that lost their lives in those wars. If you are going to war then fricking wage war. Take the leash off and demolish the enemy like an $800B/year army should. Quit pussyfooting around with ridiculous ROEs and then pulling out before the job is done

The French were likewise our allies against the Japanese and Germans in the Second World War. Indochina was theirs prior to losing it to the Japanese. It stands to reason they wanted it back. And unlike the French, Ho Chi Minh was a communist in an era where it wasn't popular to be one.

It was pretty obvious that winning wasn’t the goal and Americans wanted out of it no matter what.
