at gettysburg they won, they could have just walked into the capital unopposed, after that they could have arrested lincoln and congress and forced their surrender and the war would be won.

instead, they just fricked around and got drunk celebrating winning the battle rather then finish winning the war. all because they never expected to win so easily and they had no orders what to do after taking gettysburg

by the time they got their shite together, the north got rearmed and reinforced and turned the battle for the union.

If they weren't so disorganized after the First Bull Run, they could have taken DC.

Had they gone scorched earth like Sherman did at the very start of the war as Jackson suggested they could possibly have won.

Or they needed the likes of England or France for support.

The southern states were at massive disadvantages comparing population and industrial manufacturing capability.

I think the CSA organizers were hoping the US would let them go.

Never had a chance. No one should hold Jefferson Davis/Robert E Lee out as heros. They got a lot of poor people killed in an unwinnable “rich mans” war. And no matter what your grandpappy told you, it was all about slavery.

Also keep in mind Lincoln was not easy to work for having fired McClellan and co. The Union was searching for an identity and a nail in the coffin. They got that with Grant, but truly got it from Sherman on his March to Sea. Those two implemented some brutal policies. They worked.

And JEB Stuart point shaved like a motherfricker.

Several classes of several major colleges in the confederacy were severely depleted b losses during the war. The Harvard boat races were never cancelled. Check out Shelby Foote and his opinion.

The South had a chance to take over DC during the early battles. Lee pulled them back.

I think you all underestimate how far Lincoln was willing to go to keep the Union together. The south had no chance.

Ok, so the President and Congress move to another city and continue to function

Secession started before the southern military was ready for prime time. They didn't really expect a fight, so it was somewhat understandable, but one should always plan for the worst. Second mistake was not listening to the likes of Stonewall Jackson who believed the only hope for victory was quickly and brutally taking Washington DC (which was very vulnerable) and then negotiating a peace before the nothern war machine could get cranked up.

I believe they could have won had they started militarizing earlier and seceeded when they were ready to launch a deadly invasion to take DC. There was no path to victory in a long, protracted conflict.

Why did the Emancipation Proclamation only apply to confederate states, and not all states?

Makes you appreciate what we pulled off in the Revolutionary War even more so. The Colonies were even more outmatched against the British Empire than the Civil War disparity and they pulled it off.

I think the belief is that having a major win makes the northern population hate the war and want to quit as well as getting backing by GB and or France.
