Tempest and Defender/Stargate were two of my faves. You really had to be in another zone mentally to get high scores.

I sucked at all trackball games, not sure why.

People loved that table top football game, 4 players if I recall. I can't remember the name. I remember the base of my palm used to get pinched in the trackball, painful af.

Defender was my game, too. Don't remember any kind of 2 player version.

I have a smaller cabinet standup arcade game that I bought at Nebraska Furniture Mart a few years ago that has about 10 games including: Missle Command, Centipede, Millipede, Crystal Castles, Tempest, Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Lunar Lander, and one other.

Also have a cocktail table multi arcade game with about 60 games in it. Galaga, Space Invaders, Dig Dug, Pac Man, Ms Pac Man, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr, Time Pilot, Galaxian, Burger Time, etc.

Fun to put on 80's music and play them from time to time. Just like back in HS.

2p but alternating. OG Defender never had 2 sticks for co-op or head-to-head. 2p mode was alternating.

I did like the laser disc games. I could play “Cobra command” in its entirety with one quarter.

The music absolutely cracked me up, the build up to the screeching. My fav game at the arcade.

i remember as a wee lad taking a trip to Jackson MS from Monroe (yes, this was BIG TIME back in the day)

walked into the mall arcade and they had a row of about 20 Defender arcade games lined up on one side, and 20 Pacman on the other.

i had never seen either. i just stood there..spellbound letting the cacaphony wash over me.

i also remember the first quarter in defender, i lasted maybe 15 seconds total...if that. i thought it was the hardest game i'd ever seen.

RE: SPACE INVADERS

Did anyone else use the term "james bond" to describe the technique of leaving one alien in the upper left corner and letting the other rows get one level up from crushing you and quickly taking them all out before the next row dropped.

the bullets couldn't hurt you if the invaders were only one row up..but if you missed a single shot it was game over..but they were sitting ducks. getting that last guy in the corner was stressful.

i used to watch people play all day using this technique.

also, 16 shots then you shoot the UFO to get the max <<300>> points.

again, don't miss!

ETA, we also propped the front 2 legs of a pinball machine up on crushed cans to 'slow' the ball rolling down and giving you more time to react.

Defender was hard. I feel like it was one of those games that was enticing, but your game life was short, much like tempest

learning curve for sure, but once you got the hang of both, its easy to play for a long time.

cracks knuckles:

- Terminal (look for DAD as the top 10 on both defender and tempest)
- Pins Mechanical (you can just walk in and play all the arcade games for free! i at least buy a drink though). Look for DAD for top 10 scores on Asteroids, Defender, Tron and Tempest..but I think they took Tempest out because the vecter issue reared its ugly head again.
