You’re right, it is a scam. Go ahead and do it yourself.

My dentist and our kids ortho have been fricking rockstars.
I 100% disagree with you.

I like going to my dentist. Been seeing the same guy since i was a youngin. I take care of my teeth so i never really need much more than a cleaning and occasional cavity filling.
I think my dentist has a policy for hygienist. Once they turn like 25, he trades them in for the new model. Everytime i go , I have a fresh 20 something year old pair of titties getting rubbed on me when she reaches over me to get something.

Are dentists the medical version of body shops?

Our dentist and orthodontist are fricking awesome.
Come on, man.

Hygienist school is really difficult to get into so I highly doubt actual hygienists are traded out. The ones I know starting out are about 25
Those 20 year olds are probably low level techs, but it’s a nice perk

The yungins are too aggressive. Whatever happened to the “we can just keep an eye on that and check it next time” or “we can just patch that” approach?
Now every time I go in for a cleaning and the dentist comes in it’s “you need a crown on this tooth because this filling is too big” yada yada

Don't get me started on orthodontists. Right up there with chiropractors.
This is just purely cosmetic and I don’t think people lie about that. Do you also think plastic surgeons who put in fake tits and do nose jobs are scam artists?

Absolute bullshite. My teeth look great but, as someone who inherited bad teeth, I've spent a fricking asston of money to make sure they look the way they do.
Me too. I hit my insurance limit pretty much every year. It’s February and they’ve already rung me up for glad of a crown.
Finding a good dentist is key for me because it’s an investment. The one I go to now isn’t cheap, but they always make my visit comfortable, only tried to upswell me once and I was hesitant but they showed me a with a little tool where my runs were receding, and ordered a deep cleaning. I still don’t know if I got scammed on that one or not. I did have an area where it bleed every time I flossed (several times a week) and it has since stopped bleeding.

Do you know what scam means?

Dentists provided a valuable service, but I have noticed an increase in "upselling" in the last 5-10 years. It's about like getting your oil changed and being told you need new wipers, fuel treatment, etc.

knowing what i know now, i wish i went to orthodontic school. you make bank and there are essentially no emergencies to deal with. you do no surgery. all you do is attach stuff to teeth and make money.
In today's world, parents are going to get braces for their kids. They don't want their kids to have a complex from having crooked teeth. The demand has done nothing but increase in the past 20 to 30 years.
But I somewhat agree that there is no system of checks and balances on the price for braces. They can all charge pretty much what they want. You can shop around for a better price but who does that realistically? You would probably find that they are all about the same price. This is probably something they discuss at orthodontic conventions. Most insurance policies only give a lifetime max for orthodontics so there is no real policing by the insurance companies.

I'm 60 years old and never had a cavity in my life. The last time I went to a dentist, first thing they did (well, after absolutely verifying I had insurance) was sit me in a chair, shove a camera in my mouth, then proceed to tell me if I didn't pay to get all my teeth sealed right away, I was going to get a mouth full of cavities, die, and cause global warming to run amok.
