My niece is a nurse practitioner, one of the smartest people I know, and someone who I would trust implicitly with my health. I would wholeheartedly endorse what the legislature is trying get to do.

The author of the OP is nothing more than a scare monger trying to protect his own interest. His real motives are blatantly obvious.

Spock, I misquoted myself. It was the AMA, not AAFP.
My apologies

"Jama 2000 Jan5; 283(1)59-68"

Also check out:
American College of physicians, 2009. "NPs in primary care."
Quality of patient care by NPs and PAs, Annals of internal medicine
NEJM:(very candid article that most on both sides would agree on) "Expanding the role of the APN-risks and rewards".
And lastly, the most comprehensive, methodologically sound, meta-analysis encompassing 37 (I believe)studies done from 1990-2008 is found on Medscape family medicine entitled "Quality and effectiveness of care provided by Nurse Practitioners"

Touchet. What I meant was, if you are going to pick a diagnosis that only a Dr. can treat, diabetes wouldn't be it.
Polymyositis Rheumatica would have been better.

I'm pretty sure those are two different things.

I picked a disease that seems like it is easy to treat, and in most cases it is. But I've seen it severely mismanaged by NPs and MDs that don't know what they are doing. It's a great example. Will NPs refer the patient to endocrinology at the appropriate time? Or will they try to manage out of control diabetes by themselves.

You just can't predict what will happen when you send professionals with subpar training out on their own with no oversight.

It's the new NPs that will come out a few years after this bill passes with no real world experience, just nursing school and NP school, and want to play "primary care doctor" that I'm concerned about

And in response to MSMHater:

I see the logic behind you questioning whether or not it's of any value for a MD to just be reviewing charts by a NP.

However, I think it's atleast a screening process to ensure that someone's practice habits are up to par. It might not catch every mistake but atleast you would be able to screen some NPs that could be practicing dangerously and correct it.

My whole argument is that someone needs to be overseeing them practice in the real world before they are completely on their own. This is basically what residency is for MDs.

I was under the impression that you had to have experience (at least 2 years post BSN experience) before you could even be accepted into a NP program.

The 2 years of experience (if required?) and clinicals during the NP program would serve as this.

Obama has once again divided a group of people. Nurses, in general, have always had a huge chip on their shoulders. I rarely meet one who doesn't talk about all they do all day and how they know more than doctors. I rarely meet a doctor who bashes nurses nonstop. Obamacare doesn't work unless it has Nurses become doctors.

Obama found the perfect group of people to champion it. Nurses will be so loud and obnoxious and fight to be doctors. If you don't believe it go look at a Nurse's facebook page. They are up their with teachers in their nonstop posts about how hard their lives are. On the other hand I hardly ever see doctors on facebook talking about how awesome they are or how hard they work.

So, the sides have been chosen. Obama needs the nurses and they will loudly fight to be as respected as doctors. Divide and conquer. The Obama Legacy.

what the hell are you talking about dude? this is a state law issue.

and if you don't think a nurse puts up with more shite than a doctor, you have never stepped foot in a hospital.

i love when people spout off about stuff when they have no clue whatsoever i bet you respond to all your nurse facebook friends when they say something about their job being difficult, don't you?

A popular place to get your NP degree is NSU in Natchitoches.

It may be a state law but healthcare costs are driven by the federal government.

It is laughable when people say doctors are trying to protect their interests. What do people think nurses are trying to do?

I want to meet these nurses. As a nurse myself I've yet to encounter this mythical "stereotypical" nurse that thinks they know more than doctors. A real nurse knows exactly where he/she stands on the totem pole of medical professionals.

from what I hear from medical "professionals," the only one that knows more than a doctor than a nurse is the office manager/receptionist

Cosmo you would have loved my travelnurse days. There were like 12 of us, all fairly attractive and very much single that went out basically every night we had off. It was always funny seeing guys reactions when they chatted with us to find out that we were all nurses.
