Had a bad burn accident on my arm when I was 5. The recommendation was to debride - with an iron scrub brush - my arm every night for 6 weeks to remove the new skin, and keep the wound fresh until the underlying layer healed. This was the 80s, not sure this is kosher now So, without fail and with a wooden dowl in my mouth, my mom would proceed to leave the house then my dad would scrub my arm. Every Night. Scrub until it was bleeding all over the burn. Have barely a scar today, you have to look close to see just a little bit of discoloration. True story.

It's about the size of a quarter on my calf.

Lidocaine before debridement will help. The NP can also write an Rx for a small quantity of painkillers.

yeah I've been ordering 5% lidocain off amazon meant for roids.

She scipted me Tramadol 50mg.
She said I can take them with otc tylenol if Ilike.

I had a pretty gnarly bad burn in early 2020 during the initial COVID era.
Miller Lite and a pain med usually got me up for it. Doctors and burn units were treating via telehealth, so we were kinda on our own

My pajama bottoms caught fire from a gas bathroom heater when I was in the first grade. I took off running when I realized I was on fire and my mother caught me and tore them off me. I had bad burns on both calves. I had to go to this old Doc (circa 1965) lay face down on his exam table while he debrided my legs. I still remember it vividly. I had to go back several times.

True Story: Had a Type 1 come into ER (in 80’s) that had severely infected back from unsterile needles (wife used) - came in with maxi pads and duct tape wrapped around his entire torso.

Smell was awful and had his entire back debrided. Looked like Freddy Kruger went down his back.

ICU for over 2 months

Tore up my knee playing football. Dr Andrew’s did my surgery at HealthSouth before Andrew’s Institute was built. I got a bad case of infection and had to get that every day for a little over a month until the wound closed. Nothing like looking at a golfball sized hole into your own body

Once, bad burn on my foot. Twice a week for 6 weeks. It is absolutely by and far the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced. 0/10 do not recommend and hope to never need it done again

“ Holy f?ck that sounds terrible”

It is absolutely terrible,it’s brutal.
When I was in nursing school, surgical rotation was at V.A. Hospital. There was a younger man on the floor with severe burns.Witnessing the debridement process was awful,
Before Tagamet and Pepcid a good many burn pts.died from bleeding ulcers caused by the pain.
That’s what happened to him,Saw him on Thursday, went back the following
Tuesday and found out he had died over the weekend from a bleeding ulcer.

It takes a special kind of person to work in a burn unit.

Yep. Got hit by a stray firework when I was a kid and burned part of my back along my shoulder blades, thanks to shirt burning. I wouldn't wish the pain on anyone, but other than some permanent dimples you can't tell anything happened.

Wouldn't any flushing/cleansing of a wound be debriding?

Technically scab picking is a form of debriding, and just about everyone's done that at some point.

Wait until you get shingles.

I got shingles one time after going to the beach for vacation in the summer. I was like 33 or something when it happened. Went to FL for vacation and was out in the sun and everything, you know normal beach activities. Well when I got back home I ended up with it. It started in the middle of my stomach and wrapped all the way around to the middle of my back, on just the right side of my body. It was disgusting as frick to look at it. Got the fever real bad. I never went to the Dr for it but on the worst night I was like if gets any worse I'm gonna go to the Dr the next day. Well that night ended up being the peak of it all and it never got any worse. And slowly I started healing. I only missed 1 day of work, but in hindsight, I should have took off the whole week. I went to work because I figured if I was doing something to take my mind off it, maybe that would help.

When looking stuff up about it seems like being in the sun like that triggered it, I guess. So since I've had shingles, would that mean that I shouldn't get it again later on in life? I hear old folks get it bad, so I'm kinda glad I got it (looking at the bright side) so I wouldn't have gotten it when I was old.
