Well more people use alcohol than opiods so yes, alcohol deaths will be higher

Now look at the numbers of deaths per number of users.
This! Which the OP left out. It looks like at its highest rate, Opiod dependency is around 1.2% of the population. At the lowest its somewhere around 0.3% of the population in a state.
How many people use Opiods are not dependent? Not a lot.
Compared to how many people use alcohol? 60% or more?

Good thing we are legalizing the gateway drug marijuana
And coffee will lead you to Crystal meth...

I'm not saying that we don't have an issue with opioids, we most certainly do, but why is this issue in the forefront?
Because everyone knows drinking alcohol is cool. Just watch any movie or TV series. All the cool people drink. Just like all the cool people smoked 50 years ago.

Over time your weed dealer will probably offer you more hardcore drugs. next thing you know you're drinking NyQuil behind a RiteAid and snorting some meth.

You've never smoked weed it appears

Twas sarcasm, no one looks at marijuana as they did in the 1930s-1980s anymore.
Facts and an education on it have helped.
A "gateway" is something that is socially acceptable, easily accessible, something that can kill you..but when you see it doesn't..you have tested the waters and can go in deeper.
That's not marijuana, that's alcohol and cigarettes.

You should quit while you're behind.

88,000 / idk 100M drinkers
32,000 / idk 1M opioid abusers?
It's about the ratio not the total
I believe the alcohol number also includes lifetime abuse where most of the opioid deaths are a result of a single use to cause death.
the number has almost tripled in ten years as well

know how I know you're a pill head?
Posted on 8/11/17 at 1:38 pm to rondo
He's either a pill head, an old man or lives an extremely sheltered life. frick pain pills and frick benzos. Lost way too many friends over both of those.

Because of the sharp increase in the number of deaths. All the other causes you listed have been relatively static. Opiod deaths have skyrocketed and are still climbing.
Compare your death totals to the same categories ten years ago.
ETA - MardiGras Texan beat me to the correct answer, and provided bar graphs, too.

Did you think about this statement before you typed it?

I can definitely say DEA is getting aggressive with opioid cases in particular fentanyl. I had a meeting this morning with 2 DEA special agents.
