Lafayette has some great places but none of the ones billed as fine dining would survive a year in NOLA.

Most people. I've given up on trying to get my BIL to stop letting it smoke. He just looks at me like I'm speaking Greek.

It’s really aggravating when people say they come to New Orleans for the food. If people only knew to go 150 miles west and the food between Lafayette and Lake Charles would blow New Orleans out the water.
C'mon man

I was born and raised in Acadiana and have lived here most of my life (lived ~5 years in New Orleans in my 20's). You may be onto something as far as home cooked food, but the New Orleans restaurant scene is lightyears beyond what we have in this area.

IMO, Vestal could survive in New Orleans.

iMonellis and Mazen are some of the best fine dining anywhere IMO.

I will not argue the merits of fine dining in NOLA vs Lafayette, mainly because I don't partake in it. The OP started with mom and pops, small shops, plate lunches. That's where I'm at.

Best pizza in Lafayette now and was cool watching them grow from a food truck to a restaurant. Super nice family that runs it.
Kinda like Shane's Quesadilla Burgers. He's supposedly expanding his operation soon. Played for the Cajuns. Seems like a good dude.

quote:I think that's the disconnect. Hole-in-the-wall, plate lunches, and specialty shoppes I think Acadiana goes toe to toe with New Orleans. Fine dining is no contest though. Acadiana has some good spots on the higher end, but nothing in the realm of what NOLA can offer there. I've never had that level below fine dining in NOLA or Acadiana where I would say this is so much better than what the other offers, which is I think what those saying SWLA is comparable are arguing. Fine dining added in though is what makes NOLA what it is in the food world, which is world class.

Mazen is freakin unbelievable. The amount of crab they throw on top that fish is crazy.
For po boys, Bon Creole in New Iberia has the best I have eaten. Old Tyme Grocery is second place.

The first time I had it they were selling out of their house, had to text them to make an order and get a pickup time, I won't lie, it felt a little sketchy but was damn good pizza. From what I understand they got shut down and that's how the food truck came about, then moved into the kitchen in the beer garden downtown(which I see is now being redone again), and now this new spot on Ambassador. Pretty wild rise from selling out of your house to a brick & mortar in ~2 years time. We're going to try it soon.
