My wife is a native of NOLA. When we first met she asked what I thought about New Orleans.
I’m listening!?

My answer was, "I've never seen as many retarded people as in New Orleans."
Wait, that’s it? We’re in the universe of New Orleans first impressions, and your first thought is to dunk on retarded people? Swing and a miss.

I’m vibing your pros, homie.

Good piece.

If they could only tick back crime a bit, then NoLa would be back to being endearing for me.

Nola of the mid 80’s was nice.

I always chuckle at people that view themselves as worldly because they moved from Louisiana to Alabama, Mississippi, or Arkansas.

Or Texas. Especially Dallas or Austin. Talk about highfalutin!

Lol. That was some kind of traveling exhibit. It’s gone. Still ridiculous.

If boring means not having to wonder "will my car windows be bashed in tonight?" then I'll take boring.

I was going to say, try waking up in the morning, it’s hot, it’s wet, and someone shattered your window on your car and you need to get to work.

That’s living.

Or worry about someone jumping in your car and driving off while you are trying to get you kid out of the car seat.

My dad grew up in Harahan but would bike down the levee and into the Audubon area then grab something to eat. He was 12 when he started doing that. That would have been in the 70s, but I can’t imagine a New Orleans where kids can safely bike for miles by themselves.

New Orleans is a wonderful city to visit, easily one of the most enjoyable in the US.

New Orleans is slightly above hell as a place to live permanently.

What kills me about New Orleans is that it could literally be one of the worlds best and most interesting cities if the leadership and government were anything but corrupt and incompetent.

Every time I've visited I get reminded that it really is a completely unique place and I have traveled a significant amount globally. But it's always offset by how poorly it's kept and policed. Generally it's a poorly run city and that fact is in your face daily and that kills a lot of the potential of the town.

It once was a business destination not a tourist destination in the least.

All of that restaurant and bar business was built and maintained with a lot of expense account money. However, it first lost the trade with Cuba due Castro's revolution then the oil collapse was a one- two blow even though almost 25 years apart. There were a lot of business people from around the world in hotel suites to make offshore oil and service deals globally which were made in New Orleans until the 1980 crash. They weren't in Houston or Dallas to make these deals.
