YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK -
A crowd watching Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park was alarmed to see an adult man leave the boardwalk and stand on some of the park's most beloved - and dangerous - thermal features.
Yellowstone Superintendent Dan Wenk says park rangers arrested the man on Friday, Sept. 14. He's charged with violations including being off-trail in a thermal area, and has already been released on bond.
Wenk says they're not releasing the man's name yet, and the incident is under investigation. Geysers and hot springs are incredibly dangerous and can burn or kill people on contact.
“We take these cases very seriously,” said Yellowstone Superintendent Dan Wenk, “The law requires people to stay on boardwalks or marked trails in thermal areas. Anyone who ignores this law risks their life and possibly the lives of emergency personnel.”
Ashley Lemanski captured the incident on her mobile phone and shared it on her Facebook Saturday night.
Some viewers believe, judging by the man's posture, that he was attempting to urinate into the boardwalk.
Another visitor, Kelly Kosciuk, also captured photos and video of another incident involving the same man.

Why did they save him? The gene pool is muddied enough.

I can see the danger but I'm not sure I understand how personal injury is a crime. Arrest? Seems odd. It's like climbing a tree and falling out would be a crime there.

I can't blame the guy. I've done some stupid shite just to get a closer look at a hot, wet hole before.

Judging by the way he's dressed, he's one of those smelly Euros

More like melting. Wasn't it a few years ago that a brother and sister tried to use one of these as a hot tub?
When Darwin wins.
When Darwin wins.

You're thinking about Tuscaloosa.

The threat of legal consequences is the only thing that will deter some people from doing stupid shite. It can also damage the thermal features. That crust is thin and walking around on it leaves footprints that last a long time. They used to, and may still, have a display in the visitor's center of all the crap people had thrown in the thermal pools. If this guy had gotten himself killed I wouldn't shed any tears, but I'd rather he do it in a way that doesn't mar the landscape.

I can live with that. But anyone can climb and die on El Capitan in Yosemite. You know? Being arrested for a federal charge due to mud damage or personal risk just seems like overreach. IDK, JMO.

It was easier to save him than clean up the mess

Climbing a rock doesn't damage it. If people were traipsing around the geologic features of Yellowstone everyday they would be ruined very quickly.

It also endangers emergency personnel who may try to rescue him, or remove his body. You fall off El Capitan, no one is rescuing you.
