and other sayings....

Just saw a really cute girl, and the phrase popped in my mind.

Just what is so cute about a button, anyway?

Any other odd sayings, of which any of yáll can´t grasp the significance?

Weird. "One in the hand is worth two in the bush" popped into mine.

One in the hand and two in the bush makes perfect sense, it’s better to have one of something then not have any...

Cute as a button doesn’t make sense to me either...

The key to the issue is that it is not the button on a shirt that is meant here, but a flower bud seen in the popular name of small flowers, such as bachelor's button

The British version is "bright as a button". This makes sense if you think of a polished brass button.

Low man on the totem pole.

IIRC, Natives actually viewed the lowest person on the pole as the most important/respected.

I’ve always wondered where

“You couldn’t swing a dead cat” came from.

As in “it was so crowded in there you couldn’t swing a dead cat without hitting someone. “

If you have a pussy right in your hands, it’s better than just getting some heavy petting from 2.

When a girl once asked me “do you think your hot dog would fit in my buns?”

I was eating a hamburger and French fries at the time.

Never understood what she meant.

It comes from the old English pagan custom of sacrificing a cat to the gods before a big gathering. The priest would slit the cat’s throat and then swing it around, spraying blood on all the celebrants and blessing them. These were outside Druid festivals.

As other religions replaced Druidism, they were forced to no longer have the outdoor celebrations, and had to hold them indoors and in barns and other places. They didn’t have as much room inside and it was crowded when they did their rituals, hence “can’t swing a dead cat in here” to describe a crowded place
