Yeah the games involves a lot of things you would never see at a regular crossfit gym, because the average person can't do what those guys do safely.

The Crossfit Games
that was on yesterday while I was at the gym. I'll give the contestants credit, they were in good shape. But the shite they were doing looked silly. To each his own though.

I've known 4 people who have gotten into Crossfit. All 4 of them couldn't workout at all within 6 months due to knee or back injury.

Any specifics as to what happened?

oh okay, i wasnt trying to troll or make fun of it. Because like i said i have never been in a crossfit gym. Was just watching those videos today and alot of the stuff looked like it could hurt you more than help you.

Just a combination of bad form and awkward lifts as well as overtraining.
I have heard that if you find a Crossfit gym that isn't very crowded the coaches spend more time with you during workouts on how to do the lifts/moves properly. Those are rare to find tho.

Complex olympic lifting not meant for beginners

Don't forget doing it as fast as possible
That being said, it is obviously effective for the people who are able to do the exercises correctly

Of course it's a good thread so it gets anchored

I cringe when I watch their FB posts of them doing a snatch or other complex movement.
no wonder the injury rate is so high.

Its intense athletic training for the professional non-athlete.

Even professional lifters/athletes struggle with snatches. Yet you expect some crossfit beginner to be able to do them?

yeah that is what bothered me is the way they are doing the exercise as fast as possible with so much weight.
and why the frick did this get anchored

Crossfit, like any other work phenomenon, comes with good groups and bad groups. The ones I noticed that are good generally don't use weights much. They concentrate more on Calisthenic type stuff. (ie Burpees, Actual pull ups, wall push ups, jump ropes and lunges)
Then you have the Jack@sses that try and imagine the next cool thing and the instructors themselves know nothing about proper form.
<-- not a cross fitter

For speed...in a timed environment.

if this is the case i would see nothing wrong with it. Those crossfit games videos ive been watching i cant believe people are not constantly hurting their back

I've been doing it for a few years now. I ran into a problem with my back for a while but fixed everything due to my own research and therapy. Chiropractor, orthopedic and PT didn't help.
If your knowledgeable and do some research you'll find CF has its issues and its positives.
The main problem with CF is any joe blow can go take the weekend seminar, pay is $1000 for the certification, then open up a gym after paying the affiliation fee.
They are making higher level classes more available. And I'm finding more and more boxes that have well established clientele and very safe, well informed coaches.
It's all about finding the right box and coach(s).
All in all, it's a new type of sport. It's gonna be a few more years until most of the kinks are worked out of the programming to promote safety as well as high level fitness.

Crossfit was founded in 2000. They've had plenty of time to work out the kinks. I personally couldn't care less if someone likes to spend $100+/month for someone to tell them how to workout, but I have a big issue with crossfitters who constantly talk about how great it is and/or recommend it to other people they know.
That's just my .02. If it wasn't so expensive, I'd definitely give it a try since I have been lifting for a while and have a decent idea when I shouldn't be doing certain types of training/lifts. And it'd be interesting to try out for a month or so just to switch up my lifting/training
