I’ve done it three times, Louisiana to DC when I was engaged. Then moved my wife’s crap up there after we got married, flew down and drove a Penske back up to DC. Then 7 years later back to Louisiana with wife and 2 kids. Rented Penske truck and hauled a car on trailer on back 2/3 times Much more crap last time time around. 1st two were fairly easy other than maneuvering Penske truck, hauling a car in downtown DC streets to apartment.

Hired movers to load the truck 2 years ago on trip back to LA, then drove truck ourselves hauling one car, drove in the other with the kids. Think it was about 1500$ with loading help and truck rental, of course gas was a biatch, but it was all tax deductible then.

If single 1 BR, I’d just rent a Penske, haul his car/share driving and then fly back if you want to help or follow but it sucks driving those big arse trucks by yourself. Join AAA for the rental discount, should be under 1k.

Look into UPack. They have an option to load/unload at their service center that can save a shite ton of money on small moves like that.

Renting a truck for local use is cheap, but mileage is like 70 cents a mile and there are one way fees so as said it’s gonna be $1000-2000. Uhaul is cheaper but Penske trucks drive better.

They have companies where you can rent part of a container. It takes a bit longer but I've had family use it.

Make sure the U haul is clean when you return it. They will hit you with some pretty high fees if there is dust , dirt, or sand on the floor. Also, look over the truck carefully for any scratches or damage prior to taking possession.

1K miles in a U-haul is no fun. The few dollars you save just not worth the effort imo. Use a self-pack or sell it all & start fresh.

If you are driving cross country make sure to budget in the extra insurance(around $300). Moving trucks are NOT covered by your insurance or your credit card.

We rented a budget moving truck to move my family’s stuff from BR to PHX after the 2016 flood. Their rates were actually much cheaper than Uhaul. I think, with insurance, it cost around $1400-$1500

Doing a pod type thing would have cost around $2500 on up.

I recently moved all my belongings from a 2 bedroom apartment about 700 miles in a uhaul, it looks like the move you have would be around 11 or 1200. You can go on the uhaul (or other truck rental provider), enter the needed info about your move and you’ll get a good starting point as to final costs. I found the final price to be a few hundred dollars higher than the online estimate I did. Insurance, pads, dolly, etc added some cost. If the two of you can load your own stuff, great. I had no help available so I googled “movers” and found the needed help for $150. They showed up and had it loaded in an hour and a half. Total including gas, movers and truck was just under $1000.
One way rental and I flew back to tie up loose ends here and drove my truck back later. Wasn’t easy but it was much less costly than the “pod” type move prices.
After you get an idea of costs online, go in to the truck rental of your choice and describe your move, they’ll give you an estimated cost. Just make sure it includes everything, so you don’t get surprises on the day you pick up the truck. My move was from Hammond and the lady rhere (Denise?) was very helpful with planning. I would imagine that might vary from location to location, and provider to provider.

Like most things in life, depends on what he's willing to pay. I moved across country a few years back and looked at every realistic option. Ended up renting a Uhaul and towing my car, mostly because it cost me the least.

I've done that a few times. The last time I moved, the damned U-Haul broke down at the base of the I-10 MS River bridge.

Good thing it was in 2002 before all the TD threads popped up
