we handled in a ZILLION times better than NOLA did Katrina
Houston isn’t below sea level and the only highways in and out of town weren’t completely destroyed/inundated
There’s no easy way in and out of that

Cajun Navy 2016 was invited back to the White House by President Trump, in March 2018, to help the Houston Astros celebrate their World Championship. The men who attended this event were all volunteers who contributed their time and personal resources during the Hurricane Harvey floods.

My father was part of 200+ USCG air rescues after Katrina.
He has pure gold for stories during/after Katrina.

I was on the Pontchartrain Expressway overpass with a medical prisoner emergency team. I didn't get rescued until the Thursday after. A DOC team got us out and took us up river with the Coast Guard. I made it to the PMAC around 9pm Sunday night.
With all of that said. Yes, there were a lot of gunshots. Especially at night. Yes, some really bad stuff happened in the Dome and in and around Big Charity. Yes, there was a presence of some paramilitary type groups in the city. One of those groups spent 2 days perched halfway up the Hyatt building. We could see them walking by the blown out windows. They were heavily armed. It's not something I care to talk about much but this date certainly brings back a catalog of memories I'd rather not have.

I don't see a problem with trying to restore law and order.

I believe there was a fire in the voodoo shop around 2016. Building was demolished shortly after.

One of my dad's good friends cooked 300 lbs of crawfish on his own dime to bring to refugees staying at the Yambilee Building in Opelousas. He got there and walked in, told some of the refugees he had some free food for them but needed help unloading. The response was "F you. Now it's your turn to be our n-bomb."
300 lbs of crawfish in August?

The whole charity story is fascinating in and of itself

I moved to NOLA in 2008 to help rebuild a city Id never been to.
My neighbor was an active duty USCG rescue swimmer / AST before, during and after Katrina. He told me some stories. The one I remember is that they were rescuing women, children and elderly from the top of a building, maybe a grocery store. Shots were fired and they left but dropped off their pickups. They brought back armed personel not sure of service. Upon their return, the building was completely gone from apparent gas explosion.

I think we had this thread not too long ago and someone said that blackwater and other contracting companies were sent down here to recover people and high value assets.
Blackwater was security at the W on Poydras, which is owned by Starwood Resorts whom I do a lot of work for. They had a generator truck on the side street, laundry service, frozen and refrigerated trucks for food, working elevator (a couple), an on-site nurse and doctor and as many amenities as you can imagine-when all other was dark.
I handed over my weapon at the door and walked through a sanitary shower before meeting with the Starwood disaster recovery team, which had just finished a renovation somewhere in the carribean due to a fire. In a dark city of chaos those people had there shite together.
I also do work for Hilton and went down the street to Riverside which was completely looted and deserted. I talked to a black security guard who was from somewhere like Tennessee and had been hired as temp help and he was petrified. They dropped him off with a case of bottled water and 48 hours later he was still there. He told me at night he was sleeping behind stacks of banquet chairs in a ballroom while the looters came through.
As I walked through the covered road with the parking garage next to it a guy in a car was waving at me when a stench hit me and my knees buckled. He got out-an undercover or off duty cop and said I was trying to warn you about that dead body. He was waiting on someone to come pick it up.
That was just an afternoon about 5 days after the storm. I have a hundred stories.
One thing I remember was the old cars people had in garages. Old restored cars all over. Weird.

There was a guy live streaming katrina downtown nola while he was trying to keep his datacenter up and running. He was like 8-10 stories up but I was GLUED to the video stream for 5 days straight. DIdn't get much work done. Now that was reality tv.
Yep I remember that guy. He was in the Shell bldg. When he saw water coming up Poydras, I said "Oh shite".
It didn't fully hit home with me until a year later. I came back to New Orleans for the Saints-Eagles game in 2006. When we crossed from Metairie into New Orleans proper, on that side of the canal there were many houses still destroyed and not yet rebuilt. But the thing that got to me for some reason was this. On the news, I had seen the X's that the recovery workers marked on buildings. When I saw them with my own eyes and saw that they weren't by the front door but next to a second-story window, that's when it really sunk in. I looked around me and realized that everything I was looking at had been under 10-12 feet of water.

We were relatively safe up in Baton Rouge. As soon as we heard about the PMAC being used for evacuees we drove over from my house.
A friend and I stood for an hour or so watching helicopters land side-by-side on the track and infield at Bernie Moore, non stop. Various models and size swooping in, unloading, and taking off. It was a mix of emotions from being proud like "frick Yeaaaa. They're saving everyone."
To a more morbid realization of how few people were getting to the PMAC amid the news reports how many thousands were stranded dying in the city just an hour down the river.
Then a weird useless helplessness came over us and we went home to our families(we had 6 in-laws in my house in Highland Creek).
I would do it again in a heartbeat unlike ornery ole Fishfighter's mean arse.
Here's two random pics of what we stood by and watched from the track that day. Surreal but obviously nothing compared to folks down in the real shite.

I heard there was a standoff at a downtown hotel between some out of town police officers and NOPD officers who had stashed a bunch of loot in hotel rooms. The out of town guys were told to keep moving if they knew what was good for them.

I wouldn’t say scary, but about 5 days post storm I was in mandeville at my uncles. Waiting to get back to Kenner. At dusk we witnessed about 75 nypd cars go across the causeway with lights on. Pretty cool.

You may have hauled my cousin out. He rode out the storm in his home near the bayou and Esplanade before realizing on Thursday it was time to leave. He waded to the railroad tracks by Delgado and was then ferried to the staging area by boaters. He said the folks providing security were not messing around.

I heard a family on the Lakefront hired private security, which turned out to be members of the Italian military to protect their home from looters.
