Crappy municipal water systems

So many of the pipes and the equipment are 60-70 years old now. It was easy to pay for back in the '50s and '60s when the economy was pumping and money for municipal projects grew on trees, but ever since the 1970s not so much. We still have sections of terra cotta pipe where I live lol.
I have no idea how towns and cities are supposed to dig their way out of this. Around here the city got a $1.1 million dollar block grant and it was only enough to replace the infrastructure for two roads and 146 homes.
Basically, at what point does Jackson Mississippi become the norm instead of the exception, and at what point are boil water advisories just a way of life in most places?

I’ve seen clay and wooden gas lines in the NE. It’s crazy how terrible our energy and water infrastructures are.

Gotta give a few hundred million to Ukraine for our democracy

And their tax base is at least twice that of the most bumfricky parts of the south. That's just frightening smh.

That wouldn't be enough to modernize Baton Rogue's water system, fwiw. We're talking so much money that it's hard to conceptualize.

Maybe Ukraine could lend us several billion of our own money?

Nobody wants to pay for water/sewer/drainage infrastructure. If it was properly funded then it could have maintenance and upgrades. We prefer to run to failure.
Just think how much everyone pays for cell phones every month….but if water/sewer bills go up $2 the general public freaks out and protests.

Isn’t government so wonderful?

This is 100 percent the issue. Its politically untenable to raise water rates, so politicians kick the can down the road until the systems fail. Its not just drinking water either. Many municipal sewer systems are unable to meet their effluent standards.

That's pretty much it. People will pay 5 dollars per months to have the ads removed on the game on their phone but then go ape shite and get on the agenda at the City Council meeting if their water bill goes up 10 cents per 1,000 gallons.

Will you even think of Ukraine?

Easy now, you are forgetting the Infrastructure Bill that was passed. Sure, most of it will be used to pay for yachts and second homes for engineers and munipal contractors but if you are lucky the four way stop near your house will have ADA compliant sidewalks.

The water on the North Franklin parish water system is the color of black coffee water after these last few days of freezing temps.

Most of EBR is served by a private system.
I don’t think they have issues.

EBR taxes are funding a Billion dollar plus sewerage program. People pay.

The only reason they needed $1B system is because they neglected it for 40 years….

More and more people are paying more and more money for worse and worse service.
Ask yourself where that money goes, why that money isn't enough, and why do they continue to beg for and expect more and more?

More like it’s amazing how resilient we used to make things

At the end of this entire Russia Ukraine war we will have printed and sent close to $1 Trillion to Ukraine.
How much of our infrastructure could we fix with $1 Trillion?
