Craigslist buyer wants to send me a cashiers check

I’m selling a $600 item. 30 minutes after posting the ad I receive a text: “Am interested and i will be paying via a cashiers check which will be mailed to you and i will wait till it clears your bank and funds are available before pickup is done. Okay?”
I respond cash only at a public place. He responds “Would love to but due to my busy schedule thats why i want to mail you a check and wait till it clears your bank before pickup is done.”
Something about this seems off. You have to meet to pickup the item. Why not pay then.

My financial advisors strongly discourage this.

100% a scam, he’ll ask for bank info or something in the process.

Tell him you will take a personal check from a major national bank.

read the craigslist main page help link.. NEVER TAKE cashiers checks

Because the cashiers check will be fake, it will "clear" initially and then upon further review it will bounce. This is a common scam. He may even make the fake cashiers check for more than the item costs and then ask for the item and cash back.

It's a scam. Your bank will credit you with the funds after deposit, then the check will bounce a few days later. Meanwhile, the buyer will disappear after jacking your shite.

Take it to the bank that it's drawn on, and cash it. I did this just last week.

probably a scam

However, cashier’s checks lately have become an attractive vehicle for fraud when used for payments to consumers. Although, the amount of a cashier’s check quickly becomes "available" for withdrawal by the consumer after the consumer deposits the check, these funds do not belong to the consumer if the check proves to be fraudulent. It may take weeks to discover that a cashier’s check is fraudulent. In the meantime, the consumer may have irrevocably wired the funds to a scam artist or otherwise used the funds—only to find out later, when the fraud is detected—that the consumer owes the bank the full amount of the cashier’s check that had been deposited.

Sounds like a solid idea. One would think they should be able to tell of it's a fake pretty fast.

Contrary to popular belief, a cashiers check is not certified funds
Tell him the wire the money directly to your account. That’s the only sure way to transfer funds short of cash

Ok, I’m going to ignore this potential buyer.

Tell him no problem, but your policy is to have a 90 day wait after the check clears to make sure it is good before you turnover the item you are selling
