My hands, especially the knuckles, have been dry, cracked, and itching for several months. I had tried all kinds of lotions and creams and nothing worked. I got some coal tar lotion and put it on just before bed, and when I woke up the cracks were closed up. I've also been using birch tar soap to wash my hands. Together those two have made a big difference for me. They both stink, so you might want to hold on to those as a last resort.

When it’s cold and I have been getting to much oil on my hands and after cleaning fire arms I’ll get cracked up pretty good I will use the work hands lotion sponge thing and a razor to shave the dead skin.

Skin drying out, especially in the cold months. It is also more prevalent with people who work with solvents like painters with solvents, auto mechanics with cleaning parts in mineral spirits, etc.
It's not near as bad for me now that I'm retired, but when working and using solvents, my skin would dry out and fingertips cracked next to the nails and across the knuckles at the joints.
It can be quite painful to deal with if not taken care of.

Tell us you've never actually done a hard day's work without actually saying it.

I've used Avon Moisture Therapy Intensive Healing & Repair hand cream for 20+ years.
Tried everything else people have recommended in this thread, and this is the only thing I have found that works for me.

Invest in a PedEgg or a some kind of foot file. Strongmen have been using them for years to shave down the callouses of their hands. After using that to remove the offending skin, then use one of the wonderful lotions one of the other posters mentioned.

Deal with it every winter. Have a bad crack in my left thumb right now that hurts like hell every time I touch something.

Udder Balm. If it's good enough for a Holstein's teat, it's good enough for your hands.
