You think NS kids don't hit up the French Quarter? C'mon man...even I'm not that naive to think my daughter won't be trying it herself when she is of the right age. The biggest problem with younger kinds on the southshore is because there is no French Quarter perse and it's much harder for them to "go out" they revert to house parties. Then the drugs are much easier to come by and the problems steamroll from there.

Funny you mention that. A couple of years ago I had a dream that a chain of islands were built in the middle of the lake with a very Florida keys like flavor to them.
Was the original plan for the causeway

I really don't understand this. 80% of the people here on the NS are from New Orleans or Jefferson parish. I suspect that is a personal misperception. People are fairly laid back and easy to get along with.

Didn't know that. Are there old plans that can be viewed?

Look at the NOLA crime maps and see where the incidents happen. You claim the safe areas are unsafe so you flee to the north shore but let your kids visit the "unsafe" areas.

In the end, it frequently just boils down to how much someone wants to drink when they go out and how far they can drive while intoxicated or take a cab/uber/bus/walk home.
If the ability to cab/uber/bus/walk home after a night of drinking on the town trumps a higher property value, poor school system. etc. than the southshore is for you.
I don't think there is one side that is better or worse than the other in general, but living on the side that's best for you is absolutely key for someones happiness.

No because there is another side to that convo
"Hey won't you come over to our house on the NS"
"Yeah that sounds good I want to check out Old Rail again " "but I can't this week I have Hogs plot draft and a show I'm going to. The weekend after that I have a Super Bowl party, the weekend after that Mardi Gras starts and I'm going to the Barkus parade , weekend after that is Mardi Gras, then the weekend after thst is........... " "so it looks like I'll be free the 2nd weekend of April. Ah wait nevermind thats FQ fest"
"How about you just come down here for one of these events"

Maybe I've just met the wrong people. But just because 80% are from NO doesn't mean that they're cool, laid back people who are accepting of different people and situations. I feel like I've met the exact same person 500 times. They're all nice as can be (at least to your face), but they're boring as frick and way too wrapped up in what everyone else is doing, wearing, buying, etc.

The robberies in the French Quarter are a more recent occurrence, at least in the current number.
A visit is a short period of time. Living somewhere is different. As I said earlier I lived uptown for 10 years and had some run ins I haven't come close to having on the NS or in my visits to nola.

No, I'm not afraid; I just don't want to. The negatives of that area do not outweight the positives.

What do you mean I will "let them"? I don't know what I will or won't allow just yet, but my statement was more saying that kids sneak out and do it without their parents permission.

They are the pretentious rich white folk who are afraid to be around the common folk
ETA: Why do you think they left NOLA?

Lived in Covington for 18 years. Lived in Uptown since 2009. These places have very little in common

That's the problem with the NS kids. They don't know the city but then they come down here to party for the first time and they have no clue of the dangers or the areas. Scary stuff. My family is going through this with a 21 year old girl now. She old enough to do what she wants but has no clue of the in and outs of the FQ or how to be street smart.

I agree with you. But, very few people here seem to recognize that. I'm sure there are cool people here, too. I just haven't met that many. They seem to be in a very small minority. My closest friend here is also a transplant, and she's lived here for 10 years. I'm her 2nd friend in that time. She said she's due another in about 8 years.
There's just not a lot for people here who aren't social climbing, PTA, yoga pants, soccer moms. Not saying there's anything necessarily wrong with those people. That just seems to be only type of person around.

Did you watch the video? The person the store owner was referencing was commenting on the ability to walk everywhere and a plethora of shops / restaurants in a small area much like Uptown (Magazine Street).

I have yet to encounter this in anyway that is particular to people who live on the NS.
If you worry about being judged on your clothing visit a few salons uptown and let me know if it isn't worse.

Yo mean people involved with PTA, women wearing yoga pants with kids who play soccer who are engaged in a productive social life isn't just on the Northshore?

Meh, most NS kids go to college and do just fine. I went to HS over there, did fine at LSU, and moved to Uptown after school. I know a ton of Mandeville peeps who have done the same

Not sure it ever got past concept.
Plan was to dredge and build up islands, bridge the islands together and sell land on the islands to pay for the whole thing.
