I do this everywhere. I assumed everyone did.

They were probably liberals that didn’t enjoy the culture of New Orleans
Lesson here always lock the hotel door and use the dead bolt

“Upon further investigation the hinges on the top were loose and there was a screw missing on the top hinge so the door didn’t shut very well so to get it to shut you either had to push it really hard or let it slam shut so we don’t think the door was actually latched,” Andy Wieser said.
They say they closed the U bar metal lock at the top of the door when they went to bed.
“Now we know that when you put that little latch across the top, you are not secure, you think you are but you are not, they can still get in,” Leila Wieser said.

Just looking to bring home all the towels and linens, probably just wanted to get an early jump on Bayou Classic weekend.

The hotels have a tool that can get these open from the outside. I had one latch on its own when the door slammed once and they were able to get it open pretty easily.

Seems like a good place to post this. I met a guy that works for in the healthy agency that performs standards checks on hotel rooms in Louisiana. The #1 thing I took away from my conversation with him was to NEVER EVER use the coffee pot in the hotel room. It seems that people like to run body fluids through them pretty damn commonly. I had never even thought about that before.

I thought hotel doors automatically locked. I know they have an extra bolt or latch you can use, but aren’t most doors electronically locked? Sounds to me like they didn’t bother checking the door.
They do but the same thing happened to me recently at the Royal Sonesta. I had a balcony on bourbon and late at night someone used a key to enter the room. I assume a employee gave their friend a key. Luckily we were still awake and they took off when they saw someone was in the room. Complained to the staff and they gave zero fricks. I don’t have any desire to return to New Orleans anytime soon.

That's why you always either lock the dead bolt use the door latch to stop someone from coming all the way in after they get the door open. They even sell portable door security devices you can buy off of Amazon and bring with you in your luggage. It's common all over the place, not just Nola. Thieves are bold man, they'll go to the place of least resistance too, so give a little resistance with door lock devices.

Man breaks into hotel room door in 30 seconds with a takeout menu
Use the deadbolt or bring your own stopper.

No wonder the hotel coffee is always so shitty

Did they offer a description of the burglar?

The ubolt is not foolproof. I can unfasten mine on my apartment door from the outside. It's also why I use other means to secure my front door

I managed a nice hotel once and this doesn't happen unless
A) Inside job, employee involved.
or
B) Victims left door open or willingly let someone in.

If I'm that couple, I'm raising some serious shite on every medium I can until Marriott gives me the goods. I want a free vacation to Fiji or something.

I had a customer in town a few years ago stayed at the Holiday Inn by city hall and they woke up to this Vietnamese guy sleeping in the chair in their hotel room. They couldnt wake him up for a while...when he finally woke up he jumped up and didnt know where he was.
He apparently got drunk and either went into the wrong room or he was pushing on doors to find a door that was open so he could go to sleep
