This. Someone asked why do I care what they do with their money. On the most basic level, as I said, I don't care at all. But it is the social aspect of it.

Do we really want to be a society where everything is celebrated? When it comes to gender reveal parties, I really don't get it. If the gender is a big deal to a couple, it just seems like that would be something you celebrate with just immediate family (or really close friends) at the most, in more of a private setting.

Retail has started many things that are part of today's tradition. Santa Claus as we know him today was created for marketing reasons.

The diamond industry set the standard for how much a man must spend on engagement rings and even controls supply in order to bring up the value (which depreciate a lot once you buy them).

Honestly, just about every aspect of our life (Americans) has been dictated by marketing. "You have to do this because its what everyone does".
