I have some friends that offered me a similar position in the Hamptons, professional guest essentially, they only go out there in the summer, and that's getting a lot less frequent

I've thought about this in the context of those threads where some financial study reveals that more than X% of people aged Y have less than $30,000 saved for retirement or whatever.

I mean, what's the solution here? Desirable areas are getting more and more unaffordable, wages are stagnant and a lot of people clearly aren't saving for retirement.

The math doesn't work out. I think the solution for a lot of people is going to be move to BFE and drastically downsize your lifestyle. It's either that or work yourself to death with multiple low paying jobs that will still hire old flameouts.

He really likes it. He never goes anywhere. The only worry I have is he is at the age where medical issues can start to be issues. He's a long way from the doctor. The owners have him in a nice house, they pay him decent pay considering they pay all the household utilities and he gets a lot of food from them.

My parents had that exact same issue. My parents bought a log cabin in Arkansas that was 40 minutes from any basic necessity. My dad started having neurological problems about 7 months into moving there and it became a massive headache. Thankfully, they hadn't sold their house in Lafayette yet so they immediately moved back.

I would love to live in a rural area bit it isn't really realistic option for most people who need to work for a living or need access to certain things.

Good luck with that when a week into it you are bored out of your mind and your 2 best friends are a rattlesnake that refuses to move on and a cactus you named "Wilson".

Park Service Link

This couple volunteers for the Park Service at a remote cabin in Alaska. I think they have been there for like 28 years. It is only accessible by plane, and for several months of the year it is not accessible at all (during freezeup and in the spring when the ice has not cleared the lake).

Jack was the sane one. Wendy was crazy (according to this)
