A couple in their 50s live permanently on a cruise ship because it's cheaper than a mortgage

It only costs them a little more than $30,000 a year.

Not according to Angelyn Burk, 53, and her husband Richard. They’re living their best life hopping from ship to ship for around $44 a night each. The Burks have called cruise ships their home since May 2021 and have no plans to go back to their lives as landlubbers.

The rough math makes sense. If it costs the couple $88 per night to live on a cruise ship, that’s $32,120 a year. Currently, the average price of a home in Seattle, Washington—where the couple lived—is $958,027 which would come with a mortgage that costs around $50,000 a year.

Plus, on a cruise ship, the couple doesn’t have to pay for groceries.

I would do it. In fact I have considered it once I retire.

Or gas, but eventually you have to get off the boat and there are cost in destination ports. So if you can budget that, go on and see the world

Yeah I mean I certainly "could". Would be fairly easy as you get off a few times a week I guess.

Also, there is a constant influx of new ladies from all over looking to let loose for a couple days. That doesn't exist in my neighborhood.

$2500 a month today isn't getting you all that much in a lot of areas But how do you know what is "within their means?"

If their job allows for it and they're cool with not seeing friends and family all that much, it's probably a pretty fun way to live.

Guess I'm OT poor, my yearly mortgage isn't 30k a year. But you add utilities, groceries, home maintenance, adds up...It's pretty attractive for 88 bucks a day

Honestly, this is the most shocking part of the article. Average homes in Seattle are almost 1 million?

I would imagine in this scenario they skip a lot of port days and just live on the ship. Could I mentally do it..hell yea. It would wreck my health having that much access to all you can eat restaurant food though.

I wonder if they go on vacation by just renting a house in a neighborhood for a week.

I'm sure I could.

I'm not sure I would choose to. There would have to be some reward for me at the end of the year. If it was just to save a little money, no way.

Irrelevant, they wouldn't have to live in Seattle. They aren't living there anyway if they are living on a cruise ship full time.
