Could the barter system be successful?

In today's age?
I find as I've gotten older, that I use this more and more often, among friends and acquaintances.
I guess the only hiccup would be people who have a skill set that doesn't truly provide a necessity for living.

It reality, a currency system is a barter system

It also allows a few to control said system

Nope.
We are too specialized.
And you do realize most of the circumstances you are thinking of still had currency as well, right? It was only in very fringe cases barter took over.

Some dude went from having a red paperclip to a house by trading.

By definition barter is the trade of goods or services.

How many used condoms for your house?

Legalize prostitution under the barter system. That junk in the garage becomes real valuable then

If I recall correctly, not exactly.
His story caught on and some folks started making trades just to keep him/the story going. Kind of muddles the experiment.

No way.
An isolated instance can work but not as a system.

I remember that story.
I'm just thinking out loud.
I have a few CPA friends who do my taxes for me. They trade their service and I get them a few rounds of free golf.
Friend works as an HVAC technician, when I have AC issues, he stops by and fixes or repairs the issue at no cost and I hook him up with fishing.
Etc etc.
Guess it's more networking and friends that have useful skill sets.

Technically, you are supposed to pay taxes on barter type transactions.
Which begs me to ask:
What happens if a guy barters all of his talents for room and board? How can he pay taxes?
Suppose a handyman agrees to work around your house, cleaning, painting, etc. for a year. You let him live in your basement room, agreeing to letting him eat all he wants.
IRS going to want some taxes for his work. Who do they get it from??

Really? I didn't know this.

Provide circumstances where it couldn't be possible.

Currency is an evolution of the barter system. I don't think we should go backwards
