As someone who once worked closely with the cotton industry I can say... that is the oldest, most common joke in the book. Brought up by blacks or whites, in front of both blacks and whites, many times.
Wow, I wouldn't have thought this but it makes sense. Get ready for this to be all over the TV for the next 2.5 news cycles though.

Makes perfect sense to me. Doesn't make it any less insulting to someone who doesn't enjoy the joke, but definitely explains why someone would think to say that at a work place in this day and age.

Fwiw Gary, we let our black workers on our cotton farm drink out same cooler we do.
We do the same... We even buy their lunches when we're working in the field, and get this, they eat the exact same thing we do.

A secret recording?
Is it possible that he recorded one of this friends saying everything as a ploy to get some $$$ from the company?

It might be racist in itself to have blacks working on the farm these days.
Stay tuned folks, some idiot will be along shortly to mAke that claim.

For sure.
The thing is, those guys are all there working together, whites and blacks. Anybody who would get offended by that joke would have been fired for not working hard or showing up on time a long time ago. Those two types of people are one in the same.

I'd buy that as well.

Still not as degrading as getting called the N word in front of a Dollar General.

Fwiw, I'm not defending that white guy. He sounded pretty aggressive in his delivery, but the black guy was egging it on saying "Hang your sign, because I'm about to drink..." followed up by, "What they would do to me?" I took that to mean, "what would they do in the past"... he knew the answer to that.
Where I used to work, the "Yessa Massa, don't beat me, Massa" was always a popular response when asked to do something...

I can't imagine how quickly I'd get fired saying anything remotely close to that in my office.

Joking amongst fellow workers is very normal in every job that I have worked in. What is acceptable has always been determined by the people in the group, not by society in general. This case appears to be over the line in any environment and the people that took offense proves it. If this supervisor was serious he should be fired.
It's pretty much that simple and should be handled by the company. The news people needs to stay out of it and quit aggravating society.
