You do not have to drive in your car

Just stay consistent is all I ask

Im glad we are bringing up ridiculous scenarios

Bottom line, for the majority of situations and scenarios, one can absolutely control their own risk if they truly cared too or wanted too

Are there outlying situations? Yes.

But y’all are also playing a zero sum game, insinuating that every single hospital would be overrun to handle every single situation. That also isn’t true even with zero mitigation

My main point is we have seen society handle awful deadly pandemics

1918 Spanish flu
1957 Asian flu
1968 Hong kung flu

Etc

Those were bad and very deadly, but a dent as far as society is concerned. We don’t really know the consequences of shutting down the global economy, forcing businesses to close, handing out trillions, etc etc

I don’t think people are idiots for agreeing with the shutdown, but we have already faced the enemy of deadly pandemics and came through “fine” as far as the society as a whole is concerned

We have now created a new enemy that I’m not sure what the ultimate consequences will be

Maybe we save tons of lives and society bounces back and the govt doesn’t change

But what if that isn’t the case? What if we save lives but the economy completely crashes and big govt overreach plants it’s seed and spreads at a rapid pace?

I think it’s ridiculous from both sides that nobody wants to discuss each other’s viewpoint

Our response to this is based in part on what worked in those pandemics. Namely shutting down schools and businesses temporarily and banning large public gatherings

If you are even hinting at those pandemics being handled like this is then discussion isn’t worth having and I will gladly bow out

The Spanish Flu killed 3-5% of the Earth's population. That's a bit more than a "dent."

I hear you, but this isn't really new, right?

And it's not like that problem would be solved by letting this virus run rampant without restriction.

I have never really seen or heard of the govt basically forcing people to stop business across the board. That feels new

And because of that, people that actually wanted to work and not be on the govt tit will now be forced into that situation. Just worries me, a lot. Far more than losing 2 million Americans does from a macro standpoint

I think losing 2 million Americans would have been awful and emotional as hell, but I don’t think losing 0.5% of our population(skewing towards the elderly) really has any lasting effect does it?

This reaction potentially has a lot of lasting effects.

Would have had some terribly emotional consequences and definitely financial.

I'm completely onboard that we have saved lives at an incredibly great cost.

I really do believe it being an election year has changed how our government would have reacted.

like what?

And if we lost that many Americans while the government did next to nothing, we'd probably be facing some other issues, too, no?

I don't have all the answers, I just don't think it's realistic for our leadership to sit idly by while MILLIONS of people died.
