“Hault” is a strong word, but most would call a 25% reduction in the economy in less than a month a disaster. It’s going to cause deaths. That’s a fact. It’s just a matter of how many.

This.

Economically, 2008 was much worse than the position we're in currently.

If this goes for an entire month or two, I would say otherwise but 2-3 weeks of this is manageable economically.
It’s currently scheduled to go on for a month or two. The question now is does it go through the summer.

I'm not reacting at all. I'm posing it for discussion. Just because "nobody knows" exactly where we're going to fall in a couple weeks isn't reason to blow off planning for future course of action.

And by the way, there's already untold number of layoffs and families getting crushed by this. But CNN doesn't keep a "Families' livelihoods going down the shitter" ticker. Go tell them this is overreaction.

My good friend who is getting a master's in Bio engineering at SDSU said the same while we were out there for a bachelor party 2 weekends ago.

"I'd pay someone $100 with COVID to cough in my mouth so I could get it, self quarantine and go about my business in two weeks"

If everyone who is young and healthy intentionally got it and quarantined for two weeks we could get that herd immunity really moving!

I'm half kidding

I don't know why people keep saying this

it isn't going to happen

We have a 30-day work stoppage currently going on right now. Isn’t that a month?

2 weeks ago, people were saying no way would we get to this point.

I don't see the current restrictions lasting that long. No way.

There will be riots. People need to take care of their families, pay their bills, etc.

And I think as testing ramps, the mortality rate will plummet in the US so people will be more willing to open things up. We are getting supplies to those who need them finally, and hopefully we get more vents out there.

The warm weather will also help some. We need George Bush's weather machine to bring on a 100% humidity 100 degree heat wave for a couple weeks.

ETA:

Also, I heard an interesting theory about healthcare workers developing their own herd immunity way quicker just because of early and constant exposure and it obviously being a very tiny part of our population. Just an interesting thing to think about as we worry about those clinicians being short staffed.

I meant through the summer

some of the doomsday projections about the economy are becoming just as bad as the doomsday projections about the virus

some of y'all need to relax

We are closer to that than we were to business as usual two weeks ago. Why are you trying to normalize this?

People are losing money at an alarming rate. Most portfolios are down 20%, or more. Not to mention people are being laid off or furloughed on top of it.

It's actually happening.

ETA: It will even out, and eventually bounce back. The issue seems to be people think this will happen quickly. It won't. The market takes times to correct itself after such a drastic downturn.

Salmon, my worry is that we got to this point. People knew for a 100% certainly that the case numbers would increase as testing increased but that didn’t stop leaders from freaking out when they started to go up. That’s not going to stop. The numbers will continue to rise for the simple fact that we continue to test more and more. And as long as they go up, leaders will feel pressure to continue to look as though they are doing something meaningful. You can’t get more strict than you are now, so what’s the next step? Simply extending the current restrictions. It’s certainly possible.

and if I were an a virus doomsdayer I could throw all kinds of stats at you too

my point is that we are going to reach our tipping point on all of this sooner rather than later

so I find all the "shutting down the economy for 6 months will kill more than the virus!" thoughts to be useless

of course we can

I doubt we will, but we could certainly shut more things down

its possible

but either the public outcry will begin to be too much and they will start to loosen the restrictions

or the virus will really "pop off" and we will have other things to worry about rather than bills

I'm banking on the former happening

This I will agree with you on. I had to suspend 4 of my projects on Friday, indefinitely. Combined budget of all 4 jobs is like $45MM. That's going to wreck our economy the longer this goes on.

That said, I don't have a great solution.

Personally, if I'm going to overreact to something it's going to be the thing that affects 100% of the populace, not .005% of it.

That's the real issue here.

No I was simply educating you on the differences between where we were before and where we are now

but continue to cry about more though

“In the areas of Italy most heavily affected by the virus, doctors say they have concluded that loss of taste and smell is an indication that a person who otherwise seems healthy is in fact carrying the virus and may be spreading it to others.”
