Not exactly frigid in Wuhan though.....might be a while before that happens.

What's that shtick? Apparently sticking to the facts makes me a contrarian.

Reddit link - Phone interview with infected French doctor
Seems like it was mild for this doctor.
quote:
Quite positive interview, quick translation by myself below:
I am doing OK, I don't have symptoms. I had fever at 38°, a bit of throat pain and headache. The fever disappeared the day after, throat pain after 3 days and headache after 5 days. I have not had symptoms for 3 days.
To be honest if the health authorities hadn't informed me that I was in contact with a sick patient, I wouldn't have known it. I was in contact with two tourists I visited with their interpretor, they were coughing but no fever. I was in contact with them for around 20 minutes in their closed bedroom on January 23rd. I was informed on the 28th that they tested positive and I immediately entered the hospital to be tested. Same happened for the patients I saw after that, on this side there was no issue with them, they were also tested and for now there is no new case. At this time the epidemic had just started and I was not wearing a mask.
-Do you regret it?
-Yes considering that I am now stuck in a bedroom, but it's an experience that has to be lived. I am in the infectious disease department and in a room I can't leave and also objects can't go out of the room. It's frustrating for an active doctor like me. The infectious load is decreasing every day and I expect to leave soon.

BNO News tracker:
Johns Hopkins tracker:
17,491 confirmed
362 deceased
536 recovered
BNO seems to do quicker updates of the numbers from China in our afternoon/evening while Johns Hopkins seems to update more during the day (tends to be faster on updating the recovered patient numbers).

The BNO has deaths in a number of other Chinese Provinces which changes some statements as to confinement of fatalities inside of China

Japan has 5 positive tests that are asymptomatic. A few of the German cases tested positive after they were already over their symptoms. I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing to be honest, but I find it interesting nonetheless.

I read on the China flu subreddit that people of chinese ethicity have more of the receptors the virus targets. If true, may explain the disparity in/outside of China.

Does weather play a role in the spreading of viruses?

There have been some articles suggest this is why things like SARS, this virus, and the Avian flu are more likely to originate in China.

Yeah. Climate and the way it affects our behavior can change things. It's why we have a flu season.

Sure.
Things like the seasonal flu have been shown to have a longer "shelf life" in lower humidity and cooler temperatures, hence flu season being in the late fall through early spring.

So it’s like your body runs a fever to fight the flu in you because the flu doesn’t do well in the heat?
Then when higher temps come around, the flu dies off seasonally?

If a virus hypothetically can live for 12 hours on a doorknob in the winter, it may only survive there for 1 hour in 80 degrees with 60% humidity. Also, people are generally outside and active more in the warmer months. This leads to less time cooped up inside where viruses can be spread and a little exercise is generally not a bad a idea for your immune system.

A little bit of good news about coronavirus: The number of new cases outside mainland China is currently declining:
Jan. 31: 28 new cases
Feb. 1: 14 new cases
Feb. 2: 11 new cases
Feb. 3: 6 new cases

Sort of.
There is some belief that a fever in and of itself helps fight some temperature sensitive ailments, however, a higher body temperature also seems to activate parts of the immune system too.

The man fell sick after returning from a visit to China and was admitted on Jan. 20.
Health officials say the man is in isolation at home and is being monitored by public health workers.

That's great news.
I saw two confirmed California cases were hospitalized today. The press release didn't say anything about their condition or what changed.
