Part of what happens when most people cut the cord is they start watching fewer things in general. After a while you realize how much shite you watched just because, how much time was wasted on things you wouldn't go out of your way to watch if it wasn't just there on a path of least resistance.

This can't be said enough. Everyone trying to compare their current tv package to what it would be if they had the same thing a la carte are missing a big part of chord cutting.

Do you really NEED all that premium shite? You realize very quickly when you cut the chord that you'll easily find other stuff to do, which is a net plus even if you're not saving very much money.

I would cut the cord completely if PSvue had VIACOM channels because those are the channels my wife must have. Sling TV doesn't allow DVR so it's not an option. I only have a basic cable package for my wife. I don't watch cable tv at all.

Most channels are available on demand with Sling TV, so instead of DVR, this may be an option.

Bottom line is, I pay less for more specialized content.

Not trying to turn this into a moral argument, because I, like you, don't give a shite. However, from a financial standpoint what you're saying still isn't right. You are paying less for specialized content because your parents are still paying what it actually costs. Cord cutters pitch should really be:

"I cut the cord and saved $100 a month*!!"

*as long as your friend/uncle/parents still pay full price for all of the content I want and don't mind giving me their password.

Yea, in your situation you as an individual are saving money, but for a whole lot of people the little money actually saved isn't worth the hassle.

I agree. I work in software development and a big part of that is process improvement. Yes you use new technology but how can you make what you are doing better from a social/personal/business standpoint that will make the new technology work for you. You'd be amazed at how many people write software terribly because the requirements are it has to do what we do now.

Everyone's situation is different. If you're already paying for Hulu and/or Netflix, cord cutting can become a pretty sweet deal.

We trade services so I don't feel bad. I would feel bad if I just mooched their password.

Even if you don't share passwords, going with cable internet ($80), Sling Orange ($20), and an OTA satellite is pretty damn cheap.

I pay $100 a month for 150 Mbps cable internet and 250 channels of TV. Now that's with a friends and family discount a buddy gets me that gets me 50% off but still. If you actually break down the price of your internet and tv compared to hours of entertainment you get per month and compare it to say attending that college football game, the price is relatively low.

I pay $120 for gigabit internet and a decent TV package through Uverse, including HBO, and free streaming from my phone (no data usage because ATT). I haven't found any benefit from cutting the cord yet. Sure, I'd probably save a few bucks but doesn't seem worth the hassle in dealing with either no DVR or not being able to pick what I can record / watch at a later time. I also get lots of sports channels, WATCHESPN, FOXGO, etc.

So what you are saying is that you are doing what you can to get the best price you can.....cool.

ETA missed the friends in "Friends and Family"...sorry

For the life of me I can't find the relevancy of this statement when it comes to the corded TV vs not corded TV debate

Is that like a package deal or introductory rate.....also isn't ATT giving up on UVerse with the DirecTV acquisition?

I have a hard time believing anyone who says they have cable and/or DirecTV with the premium channels for less than $120/month. That doesn't include internet service either.

look at spectrum or att's bundle offerings.

It doesn't have any relevance if you are simply making that comparison. I'm just making the point that in the grand scheme of things TV/internet are fairly cheap luxuries compared to other things.

I would even go so far as to suggest that the "cutting cords to cut costs" argument is silly in general, because unless you just don't want to watch ANYTHING you have to have internet access, right? Well, in my case for example, my bill breaks down to $60 a month for internet. So really cutting TV and yet still being able to watch programs due to having internet would save me $40 a month (keeping the same level of internet of course I could downgrade to DSL or something and save money there too)

So let's say I did that but still wanted to watch sports, so I go something like SLINGTV, that's $20 a month, now granted I can only sign up during football season or whatever if I like, wheras under contract with Cox I have TV year round, but still. SO figure that's $20 a month, now figure okay let's get Netflix, I have 6 sometimes 8 people in home, I'd have to get the bigger package, $14 a month. So now I'm paying $34 a month for Sling and Netflix, may as well keep my much more convenient cable tv for $6 more a month (and Cox includes Netflix under the agreement I made with them, so I have that too)

From a financial perspective alone I doubt most people actually save any money by cutting the cord.

based on the discussion here and the multiple ones on the tech board, it comes down to 2 things:

where do you live, and is there competition between tv providers in your area? anyone living in major cities that has access to at least 2 internet/tv providers (att/dtv, cox, spectrum, etc) can get internet and tv bundled for around $100/month. people that live in rural areas, with only one provider that charges between $200-300/month can really save from cord cutting or streaming services

how creative are you, how much are you willing to sacrifice ? you can easily save money by cord cutting if you use other peoples log-ins, or are willing to give up certain programming.

I highly recommend looking thoroughly at the channel lineups and reading any disclaimers before deciding. There are some restrictions on ABC/NBC/FOX that are tied to the local affiliates.

I'm gonna wait till all this shite gets figured out. then I'm gonna tell directv to eat cock

Well most people in the country must live where there are cable/internet options.

I only have Cox as an option. I pay 60/internet and 35/DTVNow. I was paying for Netflix and Hulu prior to cutting the cord.

ETA The last time I called Cox they told me that they couldn't negotiate lower rates with me anymore due to cord cutters....and this was a "retention specialist"...so I told them they could count me as one of those too and cancelled right there.

So that's 95/month for internet and TV with no cord.

With the Cox cord I was paying 235 dollars per month and had increased on average 17 dollars/month every 6 months for the last 3 years.
