I have a loaded 2015 Outback limited. Uses regular unleaded, manufactured in Indiana. Great car, quality made, 34 mph with almost 500 mile range. 4 cylinder is plenty quick and the all wheel drive comes in handy at football games when you are parking out in a grassy area. Resale value is very good. Dealerships are very customer and pet friendly.

I've had one for a couple of years and would buy again. But I bought it for specific reasons.
AWD lets me drive on sandy areas; and pull my boat (hitch added). And I can throw a kayak in the back or on top. And I can sleep in the back and haul stuff there. And it's efficient and has required no repairs at all.
It fills a niche perfectly. If you are looking for efficient and cheap look elsewhere. Also look elsewhere if you are looking for an exciting vehicle to drive, it's pretty average for that.

When I think of a Subaru driver, this paints the perfect portrait of how I view a Subaru owner's behavior.
Not saying it's good or bad.
You dirty hippy.

A Subura in Louisiana is like owing a car without AC in Louisiana. Some things just don't make sense.

Should probably add that a lot of the 2.5L models had pretty serious head gasket issues. It's an expensive repair.
Supposedly they changed the head design recently. Newer models may not be impacted.

think our options right now are the Outback (which she wants) and the Toyota Highlander (which I want her to get),
My wife had a 2009 Highlander...went with the Outback when it was time for a new car. I took her Highlander, gave my car to one of our kids. It now has 170,000 miles and not the first problem...can't go wrong with Toyota (I have bought 7 or 8 over the years).

It makes perfect sense, LA residents just don't realize it. AWD Suburus are one of the best vehicles available for driving on wet roads, Baton Rouge area gets twice the annual rainfall that even Seattle does, and there is no absence of mud off road in Louisiana.

My brother's ex wife put 180K miles on a Subaru wagon and then handed it down to my niece when she went to college. My niece drove it for four more years. It was an early 80's model.

Do you live in an environment that has snow?
I've lived in the Great Lakes area and this vehicle is popular there due to its utility. If you live in the South, where snow is something you see on TV- then the answer is do not get this vehicle. Its a versatile 4 season vehicle, not a deep south vehicle.

Funny you say that because a Subaru should be a favorite car for LA.
AWD for all the water, mud and wet roads we see. Usually has roof rack for baws pirogue and crab traps. Optional dog gate for baws hunting dawgs.
Reliability so Boudreaux doesnt have to wrench on her in our brutal heat and humidity.
But when has anything made sense in LA?

Remeber, Toyota owns a big chunk of Subaru.

The 2018 outbacks will have apple CarPlay and android auto. Make sure you get one of those.
Awesome vehicle for the price. Has tons of leg room and cargo space. Comes with the cross bars on top. Gets awesome gas mileage for its class. Not much not to like. Subaru tries to stick with the same style / model for several years and make tweaks. This current rendetion of the outback is in year 3 or 4, so it should be pretty solid.

My sister had a six cylinder that was about 4 yrs old then she gave it to my nephew when he graduated college. She bought a new one last year that's a 4 cylinder and she wishes
She would have stuck with a six. I think it drives great, no issues with either one.

You want reliability? Buy a Subaru.
Period.
Period.

I've put nearly 400k miles on two different outbacks since high school. No major issues on either. Would buy a Subaru for my wife or kids without hesitation.

Update:
Bought this 2014 Outback Premium yesterday. Single owner, 7800 miles. She loves it.
