With all the layoffs happening in the O&G industry lately and the uncertain outlook on demand, would you baws consider leaving the oil patch for a job with one of the MAGA tech companies if given the opportunity? Assuming you already have a background in tech.

Pros/cons of making this decision?

If you have tech skills, you should have done that already. But don’t listen to me as I’m the dude in the thread above you bitching about my new job, so I’m probably not the best one to go to on this...

Do y’all think it may be a bad idea to get an instrument tech degree? Trying to figure out if I should still do that or pursue a different path. I’m a little worried about the uncertainty in the O&G industry

Not really, you won't be stuck to just the O&G industry. Demand for automation in industrials/manufacturing will only increase.

I was laid off in 2018 from the O&G sector. Working in the ship building industry now. Make more money and I am completley out the oilfield. Way better benefits too.

Oilfield is tech baw!

Also, what the frick does your company being MAGA have to do with anything? If a company with a stable job is looking to hire you, take it. All corporations have progressive minded HR’s so just accept it.

Although that’s what I started doing in Oil and Gas (still here for now) I can tell you it’s a really solid trade. Once you have experience and network a bit you can work anywhere. Your skills aren’t limited to any one industry.

After Katrina I spent my 14 days off helping get the Folgers plant get back up. Same exact stuff same exact problems. Control is the same everywhere you go.

Left a Norwegian company who's main customers were all the big drillers and all the OSV companies that serviced them (they made nav, positioning, and automation solutions) for what was CH2M and now is JACOBS engineering wastewater/water division O&M side

People always gonna shite and drink water....and now I live in Fla instead of la....so win win

I got my degree in biological engineering and ended up doing wastewater treatment for a specialty chemical sales company. I know how to make dirty water clean, I’ll always have a job.

But what I need to do is get some certifications other than college degrees.

The sooner you can the better you are.
Im currently working in South America in the Oil patch. There area a lot of commpanies out here.

The money aint what it use to be and companies are cutting more and more during each down turn. Im not making much either, I made more money on land. Even after all the overtime If I told you guys what I made a day, you would laugh.

Our hitches are getting longer and our compensation is getting shorter. Plus your getting taxed/fee ed more on top of everything.
Im lucky to bounce back into this field after multiple layoffs and stagnation in my old previous industry.

Im working on getting all my S*** paid for so I can say F. to this money grubbing company I am working for. The People you meet are cool, but most of the mfers out here are pirates, they will backstab you in a second to make themselves look better or to make a
"example"

Im happy to be working again, but my main objective is to get all my S**t paid for. I think I will look for an "emerging" industry instead of all the TOP BOOMER heavy traditional compaines. I should be working and some of these Gerry-at-ric 70-80 yeard old MFERS should be retired. But they cant stay home with there wives. Or there million dollar 401k isnt big enough yet. Or having a pension and social security just isnt enough. I get it they made it there they dont want to leave. But F**k.

FYI, the South American Oil Patch just hit a huge well, bigger than the Saudis, its going to get crazy over here, but we arent getting a penny more. Pretty soon they will phase us out with contractors as soon as they can. You can bank on it.
Every industry I have been in, that is the model, lets get 3rd world S*** heads to underpay them so we can "Maintain" profits.

Companies hire these 3rd worlders with sub 60 Iqs, and you know well that IF...s***t hits the fan, do not count on any of these "3rd worlders" to safely address any situtation at hand. They just dont have the it mentally. They can hardly manage to clean a room.

So if you can, get out, but make a plan. Im looking into how to transition back eventually.
Consider where you are. Consider moving as well.
Goodluck
