Children struggling with obesity should be evaluated and treated early and aggressively, including with medications for kids as young as 12 and surgery for those as young as 13, according to new guidelines released Monday.

quote:

For the first time, the group's guidance sets ages at which kids and teens should be offered medical treatments such as drugs and surgery — in addition to intensive diet, exercise and other behavior and lifestyle interventions, said Eneli, director of the Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

Or, a novel idea, how about monitor what your kid is eating and guide them to healthier choices. You know, like a parent?

quote:

The group's guidance takes into consideration that obesity is a biological problem and that the condition is a complex, chronic disease, said Aaron Kelly, co-director of the Center for Pediatric Obesity Medicine at the University of Minnesota.

"Obesity is not a lifestyle problem. It is not a lifestyle disease," he said. "It predominately emerges from biological factors."

"Don't worry bro your kid is fat because of genetics, not because you let him eat a pack of Oreos while he plays Fortnite"

That's all fine and dandy, but these are kids man. If a drug helps them lose a ton of weight, it's good for them and great for society. Yeah some of it is shitty parenting but a lot of it is the parents passing on even worse genes.

It’s amazing. The food lobby continues to frick with our food to make us slow, lazy, fat and unhealthy. Big Pharma loves it cause they make money on big fat unhealthy people. This is a cycle and the government is complicit with it.

I thought surgery should always be the last resort. I've seen a lot of kids who were chubby and when they started playing football in middle school they started to thin out. Just put them in sports early on.

1st step on solving the obesity crisis is admitting that food is addictive and that’s the intention.

The first law of thermodynamics works everywhere we have ever used it, except for the human body apparently.

It isn’t rocket science to get a darn good estimate for calories burned in a day. Base ones caloric input off that metric and if the input < output watch as the weight on the scale magically stops going up.

Pumping kids full of drugs while they are developing and their brains aren’t fully developed is an awful idea. Walking and not eating McDonald’s 4x a week would be a start.
There is no excuse for kids to be fat at all.

I could tell I gained weight sitting around Christmas weekend and eating. I could feel it. When I checked the scale when I got home, I had gained weight.

Now these people do this everyday.

My grandpa used to say "you don't eat when you are hungry, you eat to keep from getting hungry". In other words, you don't eat as much when you eat to keep getting hungry.

I think one thing that plays a factor is that many kids are taught to finish their plate. That's not a good thing to do when they are served large portions. That makes their stomach bigger.

There are several things that play a factor. Food addiction being one.

There is absolutely no evolutionary benefit to fat genes, ergo they dont exist. Everything you see is a product of diet and lifestyle.

The entire medical community cannot be questioned. Trust the science.

Families pass along eating habits and blame it on genetics.

“There is absolutely no evolutionary benefit to fat genes”

I disagree ,with a qualifier. When humans lived the hunter-gatherer lifestyle it was a benefit.Pack on fat during times of plenty to get through times of famine. We don’t have times of famine anymore.
So much food is highly processed now and combine that with our sedentary lifestyle and labor saving devices the fat gene is detrimental to health.

My goodness. Perhaps in a very, very small percentage of people but as a general rule people are fat-asses because of what they voluntarily consume.
