but will rise again in House
This was expected because of the way Edwards had this bill assigned to a committee sure to reject it.

Legislation to make it more difficult to remove Confederate monuments from public grounds was voted down in a Louisiana Senate committee Wednesday (April 6), but the issue isn't dead.
State Rep. Thomas Carmody, R-Shreveport, is expected to move his own pro-monuments bill in the House, which was filed last week. Several legislators said Carmody was waiting to see what happened with the monument proposal in the Senate before moving his own proposal, House Bill 944.

Republicans control the Senate, so it's a bit unusual for a committee to be made up of more Democrats. Supporters of the pro-monument legislation believe the measure would have performed better on the Senate floor, than it did in this particular committee.
But it's likely that the Confederate monument legislation was sent to this Senate committee on purpose. Senate President John Alario, R-Westwego, doesn't like the legislation and has a lot of control over which committee hears which bills.
If Carmody introduces similar legislation on the House side, it probably would get a friendlier reception. Republicans also control the Louisiana House, and make up the majority of the committees that would hear that legislation.

Treason + losing = your shite goes in a museum not state/federal property.

I'll take 120 years of precedence over a finger in the wind whim of a fly by night elected official every day.

I'd bet my left nut that you didn't give two shits about this a year ago.

What makes you say that?

Because that was prior to the church incident. I didn't hear anyone calling for statue and flag removals before that. It's just a knee-jerk reaction to one incident of an insane person shooting people.
I'm pretty disaffected, but I do think this legislation will pass and they'll stay up.

That's putting it mildly.

Okay the HORRIBLE CHURCH MURDERS.
I still didn't see any movements to remove statues prior to that. The only one I'd feel kind of bad about is Lee. Sure, he was on the losing, "treasonous" side, but he was a great man by anyone's standards, an abolitionist, and the South was getting brutalized by reconstruction at the time his statue was erected.
Everyday citizens didn't deserve to be treated like that because a bunch of politicians started a war.

I feel pretty much the same as you in that I don't care if they stay or go but I do have a few concerns.
First is that now that we've made the debate public, I don't think the State can come out of it without looking like we're still backwards rednecks from those on the outside looking in. Appearances are pretty important to anyone considering moving their business to LA. Either we're redneck for not having done it sooner or that so many people are fighting to keep it. Had we not even considered the issue in the first place, everyone would've continued to pass by with nary a consideration to it like they did for the past several decades.
The other issue in my head is that it's enabling the movement in this country that everyone is offended by everything. People need to grow up and get over themselves, start paying attention to things that really matter because we all have much more important issues to address...

The impression I get is, they are just going to drag this out long enough to where nobody is really paying attention and basically just let it die. It seems we are almost to that point. Dipshit, Mitch, got whatever it is he was looking for.

quote:That's the biggest thing. The offense industry is feeling too empowered these days, but anger on both sides of an issue always fuels the fire. The statues are a perfect example of that. I don't think a kneejerk reaction creating spontaneous outrage should lead to changes in the city landscape, but I also don't think local contractors should be getting death threats.

I wasn't saying businesses would use this in their decision making process per se. Just that any spotlight we put on even the slightest racial issue only reinforces the national stereotype of us.
In the end, Mitch pandering to his constituents with this will only serve to open old wounds and the best thing to do was just to leave it alone.

I hope they put up some Malcolm X statues in their place.

Maybe they can put a replica of Plymouth Rock on top of his statue.

Awesome. Build a Malcom X statue. Put it right in the middle of Canal Street. Would add to the cultcha. Just leave the statues my ancestors built alone.

Not a state/federal property. One of the leaders of the movement to take down the monuments is a political friend of Landrieu's. He plans on putting them in his personal museum & charging fees to view them, along with other Civil War related objects. Landrieu's personal friend = money for said friend.

Why don't they put up some monuments acknowledging this accomplishment:
324,000 U.S. Blacks Killed by Blacks In Only 35 Years
quote:
on average—9,252 black-on-black murders every year for the past 35 years, you arrive at a staggering 323,820 blacks killed by other blacks on America’s mean streets in just three-and-a-half short decades.

for every black killed by a white police officer in the U.S. every year, there are about 71 blacks killed by other blacks.

They have money for this but not the money to fully fund the pretrial diversion program.
A solution to all this? Sell the Jeff Davis statue to Beauvoir. Exempt the White League monument from vandalism laws.
Lee stays where he is. You don't even know what's on top of that column unless someone tells you. If you want to downplay him, change it back to the original name (Tivoli Circle) and it isn't a state or court issue.
I doubt most statue haters even know who Beauregard is.
