concussions and memory loss

I have no memories of my kids beyond a year or so. I look at my 1.5 year old daughter and I'm sad because neither of us will have any recollection of this amazing time we're spending together.
I got a TBI via getting hit by a drunk driver and going out for a couple days. Since then my memory has gotten progressively worse. From what I read, there is no hope of a cure right now. Just have to take lots of pictures, I guess.
Anyone else have this problem? Any foods or weird internet tricks to help hold on to these memories?

Man, really sorry about that. I guess just take pictures, maybe put a note on the back. I don't have any problems like this but I guess if I did, that's what I'd do.

Sorry to hear that. I would look into fish oil, personally. Might not be a miracle cure or anything but from what I understand it's worth a shot.

Yep. And it's not good. But, it's either look at the bright side or cry. I try to look on the positive side. Some days are too much for me. But, many are good!

I sustained a serious head injury in the past, and while fortunately memory loss hasn't been a noticeable symptom of mine, I've developed migraine headaches which I had never experienced before but continue to pester me every day since.
I have been very lucky in my recovery because there was a period of time when it was grueling to walk moderate distances unassisted because my balance was thrown completely out of whack. I'm not sure how old your injury is, but within a year I had recovered tremendously that my only persistent symptom are migraine headaches. I took omega fish oil supplements like another poster recommended, but I cannot honestly attest for their efficacy or not. It probably was just a placebo but I felt more comfortable taking them (supposedly your brain re-builds connections between neurons using fatty acids, and for whatever reason the fats in fish oil are apparently better)
Unfortunately I have no medical background or any sort of expertise to validate my words of encouragement, but I wish you a stoic recovery and recommend you try to maintain an optimistic mindset because there were times when I abandoned hope and didn't think I would ever recover as substantially as I have. Speaking from personal experience, head injuries are especially abhorrent because even though the symptoms are at many times severe and miserable, most people struggle to grasp just how difficult the recovery is because from the outside we superficially appear completely healthy. I earnestly hope that your recovery is similar to mine and that a year from now your symptoms will dramatically improve to just being mild inconveniences, but never lose hope and make sure you find a Neurologist that you feel super confident in (I ended up visiting four before I found one that I felt comfortable with tracking the progress of my condition).

I can't remember 90% of stuff until I around the time I started driving. After that, I remember about about 75% until a big knock on the noggin maybe 7 years ago I guess. Since then, I remember about 50% of stuff. Short term memory is shot. Right now, I can't remember what I ate for breakfast or lunch. People were fricking with me on TD for not remembering when I graduated college a few weeks ago.
The only things I do now are having specific spots where I put things throughout the day. I have to move my medicine bottles, my toothbrush, etc.
Tried taking meds for it and doing memory games. Nothing works. I have no choice in picking what I do and don't remember
Eta: Just looked at my old bottles of meds. I tried gingko, fish oil, and citocoline

Really sorry to hear.
The ketogenic diet has some real success in reversing the effects of TBI.
Google John Welborn, Ketogenic. He has spoken at length about it in his Power Athlete podcast.
In summary, he had a measurable amount of brain damage from a decade in the NFL, went ketogenic, and scans show almost a complete reversal.

I was concussed 5 times in Iraq by IED's. This was 11 years ago. My experience has been your immediate short term memory is fricked. You will say things and you will completely forget about them. BUT the good news is you will make new memories and those will stick. Its just the small stuff. But sometimes you will make promises that you won't keep not because of your intentions, but because you literally instantly forget saying things. Are you noticing any problems with studdering? I had that problem for a few months. Another thing i have problems with now is frequently not being able to think of a word when trying to say it.
ETA: I agree with the previous poster's comment about a Keto Diet. It has helped me some as well, not significantly mind you, but when i am on the Keto my short term does seem to be a bit sharper. Could be placebo effect though.

And if you aren't much of a writer (or you just don't have a lot of free time, what with a 1.5 year old and all) you could use the video feature on your phone or computer to record small observations about your life and your child's life periodically. I started doing that when my kid was born bc I knew lots of stuff would be forgotten. Now I have those to look back on when they get older, and they will have them too once I'm gone.

I would give these a fair 3 month try to see if you notice any improvements.

Had many concussions. Don't know of any tricks, I did try BCAAs for a while. I felt sharper, but it didn't help with retention at all. I've started losing words here and there, too. It's weird. I just take lots of pictures and record lots of videos. I try to look through them all frequently.

Mine isn't as severe as yours but I got into a motorcycle accident awhile back (I had a thread on it). Guy pulled out in front of me and I slid under his truck and slammed my head on his back bumper, out cold. Woke up and couldn't remember a thing; name, age, birthday but somehow I remembered my social security number
but no memories of that week at all (a lot shorter than your term im sorry man)
I'm also on the migraine train, Fiorocet is what the doctor prescribed me and it helps tremendously but you have to be careful, I slowly found myself taking them just to feel better.

Man, that's pretty weird. I couldn't remember a damn thing no matter how hard I tried.....except my SS#. No name, bday, addresses, phone numbers, etc. Somehow came up with my SS# pretty easily.
