My coworker had his laptop stolen out of his vehicle. The company responded by saying that he had to pay for it and could file the loss on his homeowners insurance because they could not insure the laptop themselves. Some of us drive company vehicles while others receive a car allowance for their personal vehicle, is there a different scenario or does personal homeowners cover company property inside a company vehicle? What is the opinion of the OT?

Hell no he's not responsible for it. Do y'all work for a mom and pop or something?

that's kind of cheap of the company
the value of a used laptop is next to nothing

now if it was a situation where he could have prevented the theft by not leaving it in his car then that's on him

I always put stuff in my trunk if I have to leave it in my vehicle for whatever reason

Your co-worker is going to be purchasing a new laptop on his own dime.

That's a very slippery and dangerous slope. Eat the loss and move on. You're likely to lose both a coworker and the laptop otherwise.

For sure it is a shitty policy.

Yea, what's he going to do? Petition the CEO? Hire a lawyer?
Maybe find a new employer

at most companies this is only true if (1) this is not the first time something has happened (2) there are three employees

That is crazy. That would be like my employer expecting me to replace my cell phone after i dropped it overboard fishing. I told them what happened and had a new phone the next day. Your employer is shitty.

He needs to pay for the laptop and hope he doesn’t get fired. I can assure you there’s a company policy about the protection of company owned assets.

Don’t let HR get wind of the situation.

Nothing on the laptop that is highly confidential but a lot of proprietary info if he is saving files like I save them. We have no VPN protection so if they do gain access, which is unlikely for a car thief, it wont mean much. Still seems a company would have a bit more security for these situations
